Description

99 points & 2026 Halliday Cabernet & Blends of the Year

Dry Red No. 1 is where it all began for Yarra Yering, and in 2023, it’s once again a masterclass in what makes the Yarra Valley one of Australia’s great Cabernet regions.

This is a wine built on the strength of its foundation - Cabernet Sauvignon from the very first plantings in 1969 - blended with Merlot, Malbec and a splash of Petit Verdot from neighbouring blocks. Every parcel is treated with reverence: whole berry ferments for fragrance, open-top fermenters for texture, a mix of new and seasoned oak, and one third of the Cabernet gets the royal treatment with eight weeks on skins in a 3,500L oak cask.

This is a glorious wine. A wine of depth and quiet power. Dark fruit, fine tannins, just enough grip, and a savoury undercurrent that builds with every sip. It’s polished, but not flashy - in every sense a benchmark of the famous Yarra Valley Cabernet wine style.

It's a wine destined for great things. Winemaker Sarah Crowe knocked this out of the park. It should be an essential part of any serious Australian cellar.

99 points and 2026 Cabernet & Blends of the Year
"Classic cool-climate cabernet aromas of black cherry, blackcurrants, cedar, licorice and subtle iodine. The palate is simultaneously concentrated, structured and refined, finishing with an ironstone minerality."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Very smart cabernet blend, albeit very young at this stage and ideally should be cellared a few years."

"I suspect some pretty good fruit has found its way into this exceptional wine from the challenging vintage. Old vines in difficult times show their worth."

99 points and 2026 Cabernet & Blends of the Year - "Score awarded by the Halliday tasting panel at the annual Awards judging. PR writes: A blend of 58/23/15/4% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/malbec/petit verdot, the cabernet coming from the original '69-planted vineyard. Matured in barrique (35% new). A deep, bright purple. Classic cool-climate cabernet aromas of black cherry, blackcurrants, cedar, licorice and subtle iodine. The palate is simultaneously concentrated, structured and refined, finishing with an ironstone minerality. Approachable now with food, but anyone who buys some will want to make sure they still have a bottle, or three, 10 to 15 years from now." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "Deep and bright purple-red colour; cassis and dried-herb aromas, thyme, oregano, and classical mulberry/cassis cabernet fruit. A wonderful set of perfumes. The wine is full bodied and intensely flavoured, with delicious style and bell-clear varietal cues. Some saline notes at the finish amongst the velvety tannins. Very smart cabernet blend, albeit very young at this stage and ideally should be cellared a few years." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot planted by Bailey Carrodus way back in 1969. I suspect some pretty good fruit has found its way into this exceptional wine from the challenging vintage. Old vines in difficult times show their worth. Concentrated fruit with medium weight that presents with a stylish grace that is what this wine has been from the start. Has a typical minerally leafy thread with chalky tannins defining the palate length." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "If ever the word classic was apt, it’s here and now. This wine is polished, fresh and to an extent, fruit forward. And yet everything about it feels or tastes like old money. There’s just nothing earnest or try-hard about it. It’s a complex, lengthy, fluent cabernet with leaf matter and peppercorn characters strewn through redcurrant, musk, mint and red cherries. There’s a smidgen of blackcurrant here too but it doesn’t attempt to be dark or inky or anything like that. It’s more about medium-bodied charm. And charming it certainly is." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

58% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 22% MERLOT, 15% MALBEC, 5% PETIT VERDOT

A melange of summer berry fruits and a comforting rustic iodine feel complement some bay leaf lift. Warming clove spice, a hint of graphite and some oak char bring both flavour and tannin. Beautiful fruit weight, refreshing acidity and fine tannins form a solid foundation for a long future. Complex and layered, but not intimidating, always exciting to watch evolve.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
