Description

"Here we go! This is everything I love about modern McLaren Vale - pure red fruits, perfume and freshness, lovely fine tannin. A seriously smashable blend from two of our great winemaker mates in Brash and MJC. Proud to offer this little gem exclusively to our customers. Get some!"
- Tom Hollings (Different Drop Co-Founder / Wine Buyer)

We are thrilled to be the only retailer in the country to offer you access to this exciting collaboration between two of McLaren Vale's finest producers.

The Van Higgins "Free Ball" Grenache Cinsault is a 50/50 blend from the creative minds of good mates Michael J. Corbett (Vanguardist) and Brad Hickey (Brash Higgins). It was conceived over many late nights sharing bottles of 'baller' (hence Free Ball) reds from some of the Rhone Valley's finest, the likes of Gramenon, Rayas, and L’Anglore, a medium-weight red blend that captures the best of McLaren Vale is where they settled.

It's a deliciously harmonious blend of Grenache and Cinsault, each variety bringing its unique flair to the table. The Grenache comes from the gnarled 'goblet' bush vines on Vanguardist's 'Silver Sands' Rende Vineyard in Blewitt Springs. The Cinsault comes from the Lennon Vineyard in McLaren Vale, just outside the front door to Brash Higgins HQ. Half the fruit was destemmed and the other half kept as whole bunches, then ageing in a combo of 600L ceramic eggs and demi-muid barrels. This kept the wine fresh and bright, focused on the excellent fruit quality on display, without the hindrance of heavy-handed oak.

We love the freshness and flow of this wine. It's all red and blue fruit, some frisky spice, floral accents and beautifully shaped tannin that lingers long on the palate.

There were only 123 dozen made and it is only available from the two producers' websites and here at Different Drop.

"A bold pop of ripe cherry, dried roses, a bit sappy, dried herbs, raspberry too. It’s medium-bodied, a lively and vibrant wine, cherry soda and some turned earth, rosehip tea, fennel crunch, bright cranberry acidity, there’s some clay-like things, and dusty tannin grip, with a juicy/savoury finish of excellent length. It’s fun, and it drinks a treat. Spicy and interesting."

Amazing quality, just not for drinking now

The fruit quality is outstanding. That much is obvious. And then there’s the tannins. Which are fine but nonetheless robust.

I drank this over 3 nights hoping the tannins would soften and I could expose and explore what the fruit had to offer beyond the surface but it was locked down like St Quentin’s correctional facility. It was quite brutal and forbidding.

But, I highly recommend you buy lots because the fruit is exceptional and in 3-5 years you can begin to enjoy it. And beyond that, it will develop the secondary flavours but still remain precise, directed and filigree.

So, this is a buy now, enjoy much much later proposition.

(Perhaps if this was 85% Grenache and 15% Cinsault we could enjoy this much sooner.)

So be patient and this will 100% reward you for it.

"VAN HIGGINS" was the logical name for a wine collaboration between Vanguardist and Brash Higgins. A debut offering of a Grenache/Cinsault blend titled "Free Ball". Both winemakers, Michael Corbett of Vanguardist and Brad Hickey of Brash Higgins, have become known for their reverence of Grenache and Cinsault, respectively, with each presenting their distinct styles.

The genesis of this wine arose from shared moments during “free” evenings of cooking and savoring "baller" Rhone wines together. Inspired by these experiences and wines like Gramenon, Rayas, and L’Anglore, the duo envisioned creating a wine from their own fruit sources, highlighting the complementary cherry starburst perfume of Cinsault from coastal clay soils with the dried roses, chalky tannins, and cool acidity of Grenache from nearby sandy soils.

The winemaking process reflects their shared vision: a 50/50 blend of Grenache and Cinsault. Half the fruit was destemmed and fermented separately from the other half, which was kept intact as whole bunches. Post press, the wine was aged in 600L eggs for six months, with an additional six months in 600L demi-muid barrels. Michael and Brad, with their inspired and educated palates, sat down to taste the wines side by side. Ultimately, it was decided that the wines were most compelling when blended together, harmonizing their individual characteristics into a cohesive whole. The wines were racked and blended in tank and bottled two months later without fining or filtration.

The Grenache sourced from Vanguardist's 'Silver Sands' Rende Vineyard in Blewitt Springs brings its distinctive qualities, while the Cinsault from Lennon Vineyard, adjacent to Brash Higgins HQ in McLaren Vale, adds its own unique character. Brad grafted one of the first Cinsault blocks at this vineyard in 2013, enhancing its significance.

VAN HIGGINS “Free Ball” epitomises more than just a blend of two grape varieties and winemaking techniques; it embodies the collaborative spirit and profound friendship between two winemakers who share a deep passion for their craft.

Vanguardist

Vanguardist is an up and coming producer from McLaren Vale started by three friends after many long nights in Hawkes Bay talking about their shared love of wine.

Their mission is to bring premium, authentic, small-batch wines to a market they see as crowded by "overly commercialised wines produced by corporates who take up all the elbow room."

They source very high-quality fruit from great vineyards across South Australia, looking to build wines with texture and vibrancy.

With experienced winemaker Michael Corbett at the helm, the future looks bright for this plucky challenger brand.
