Description

This new release from Usher Tinkler came about over a shared bottle of wine, as so often great ideas do with the desire to offer a barrel fermented Hunter Chardonnay immediately accessible both in style and price point. Usher Tinker own over 60 hectares of established vineyard in Pokolbin including some superb older Chardonnay vines. This wine comes from a 1.6 hectare vineyard planted in 1985, vines now over 35 years old, sandy loam composition.

Handpicked, 100% barrel fermented in a mix of 1 to 3 year old French oak with a small portion going through malolactic fermentation. The 2022 has been aged for 18 months on fine lees with battonage during the elevage.

This wine takes it’s name from the vineyard “Paperwasp Vineyard” due to the high number of Paperwasps that nest in the vines around harvest time.

"This single-vineyard wine has fresh, high-toned aromas of lemon and grapefruit elevated by enticing, fragrant oak. The palate has exceptional vitality with a modern expression. Fresh, textural, and expansive, the wine is deliciously long, framed by compelling phenolics and tensioned by a core of mouth-watering acidity."
- Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "The luxe packaging is something else. Looks great. Single vineyard fare here. It’s a lightweight Chardonnay, not without flavor, but everything very gentle and comes with a distinct sheath of briny minerality. Lovely. Just so green apple, perhaps a bit of fennel and chamomile tea, a splash of just-ripe nectarine, licks of salted cashew and green melon. A little grip to texture, particularly through the finish, is spot on. It has that sense of a leaner, friskier style, and it does it well." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

90 Points - "Bright and zesty aromas of grapefruit pith, just-ripe white nectarine, white flowers and nougat. The flavours are fresh, stone fruit driven, creamy and lively. Tangy acidity and a lick of nutty oak deliver texture and length" - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

    Great chardonnay

Don't usually like chardonnay but i love this one!

‘The Dance of the Paper Wasp’ is familiar to many a backpacker during harvest in this vineyard. These wasps love to nest in the canopy of our vines at the exact time of hand harvesting.

Hand picked and partially whole bunch pressed. The juice was transferred to barrels for a mix of wild and cultured yeast fermentation. The wine was barrel aged in 10% new French oak and 90% 1 to 6-year old French oak, with 15% undergoing MLF. Over the 8 months in barrel the wine underwent monthly lees stirring.
