Description

Vat 47 is an important piece of Australian wine history. First released in 1971, it was the country’s first commercial Chardonnay, and it’s still setting the standard more than 50 years on. The 2023 continues that legacy with classic Hunter Valley richness, precision and quiet confidence.

Made entirely from estate-grown fruit, much of it off old vines on the HVD and Short Flat blocks, it’s fermented and matured in French oak with a focus on texture and balance rather than overt oak flavour. The result is a full-bodied Chardonnay with depth and generosity, but also freshness and structure to carry it.

This is a wine that consistently over-delivers - drinking beautifully young, but with a strong track record in the cellar. A proper modern Hunter Chardonnay that nods to its roots without being stuck in them.

"Lemony fruit is intense... expansive, textural and deeply satisfying... finishing with remarkable purity, energy and deliciousness."

"Struck match, green pear and apple, nougat/almond, lime zest... fine chalky grip, long with green olive and lemon peel."

98 points - "An established star in the Australian wine landscape, and rightly so, for its purity, complexity and power. Made from hand-picked grapes sourced entirely from the Short Flat vineyard, planted by Murray Tyrrell. The lemony fruit is intense and the palate is beautifully expansive, textural and deeply satisfying, with barely perceptible savoury winemaking details that embellish and enrich the wine without a shred of dominance. The flavours build to an impressive crescendo, finishing with remarkable purity, energy and deliciousness. An outstanding chardonnay – one of Australia's best. Pure class." - Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "This is going to be a very good Vat 47. I’m sure of that. Gets about 10% new oak. This wine is well represented on wine lists in NSW, and despite having to pay a premium, I often find myself ordering a bottle. A little struck match, green pear and apple, nougat/almond, lime zest, spice. White peach in with light citrus flavour, fine grip, lovely even flow, fine chalky grip, long with a little green olive and lemon peel cinch of bitterness. Such energy here, and it’s tight too. It’s a classic Vat 47, and hence, give it a few years in bottle before drinking. Terrific." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    2022 Tyrrell's Vat 47 Chardonnay
Rated 5 out of 5 stars
    decent Hunter Chardonnay

I won't be drinking this for another 3 years at least and I am sure it will be pretty stunning for the quality that it will deliver on its price.

Vineyard
Vat 47 Chardonnay comes entirely from the Short Flat Vineyard, where the original Chardonnay vines were planted by Murray Tyrrell in 1968. The soil profile in this dry-grown vineyard is unique among the Tyrrell holdings, giving Vat 47 its distinctive character.

Vintage Conditions
Spring 2022 saw abundant rainfall, providing excellent soil moisture for the dry months of December and January. The harvest was smooth and free of adverse weather. The 2023 vintage produced well balanced, complex wines with excellent fruit purity—an exceptional Hunter Valley vintage.

Winemaker’s Notes
Fruit was handpicked between 27 January and 3 February, about one week earlier than in 2022. It was immediately basket-pressed, cold settled for two days, then racked to stainless steel to begin fermentation. The fermenting juice was transferred to French oak barriques for fermentation and maturation, and bottled in October 2023.

Tasting Notes
A strong Vat 47 release, with intense citrus and white stone fruit aromas complemented by a subtle oak background. The palate is powerful yet elegant, showing grapefruit, lemon citrus, spice, and creaminess. Textural elements from solids fermentation and extended lees aging contribute to depth and power, balanced by a lively and fresh finish.

Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.
