Description

Many will be familiar with the anomaly that is the Tyrrell's Vat 6 Pinot Noir, a wine that has a long and storied history. It doesn't seem like Pinot should thrive in a region as warm as the Hunter Valley, but if you look at the Vat 6's storied history, you'll see that if grown right it can be a world-beater.

This wine is made from all of the best parcels of fruit that didn't quite make it to the Vat 6 Pinot Noir from this vintage. Estate-grown, beautifully balanced. If you want to see if Hunter Pinot is your thing, this is a top value way to find out.

"Lovely feel to them – balanced acidity, with subtle orange peel bitterness on a finish of excellent length. So delightful. Love this."

94 points - " 2023 is a great vintage for Hunter reds, and I’m told that it was particularly notable for Pinot Noir. I like Hunter Valley Pinot Noir, so that’s good news for me. Cherry and red fruits, a little vanilla and baking spice, some dried rose perfume. It’s medium-bodied, all juicy cherries and spice, tannin offers an emery board grip – lovely feel to them – balanced acidity, with subtle orange peel bitterness on a finish of excellent length. So delightful. Love this." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

First time trying PN from Hunter Valley

Not too much red fruits in this wine comparing to a PN from Yarra Valley, yet still pleased to drink. Tyrrell's never fails you after all.

This Special Release Pinot Noir is a blend of barrel selections from the HVD Vineyard (75%), planted in 1984 and the 4 and 8 Acres Vineyard blocks (25%), planted in 1971 by third generation Murray Tyrrell. Representing the best parcels that didn’t make the final blend of our flagship Pinot Noir, Vat 6.

In the lead up to the 2023 vintage, there was an abundance of rain in spring which gave great soil moisture heading into the dry months of December and January. The harvest period was relatively stress-free without any adverse conditions such as rain or heat. This vintage has produced well-balanced, complex wines with fruit purity and is considered to be an exceptional Hunter Valley vintage.

Each of the Pinot Noir blocks were picked and fermented separately in small open top vats. Different techniques were used to add complexity to the style; natural ferment and whole bunch, verses destemmed and inoculated. After two weeks of traditional extraction these batches were transferred to older French oak barriques. Following eight months of cool maturation, individual barrels were selected for this blend. No fining and filtered to bottle.

With depth of colour, flavour and intensity, this 2023 Pinot Noir is complex yet pure fruited with notes of cherry and red fruits. The acid and tannin structure are balanced perfectly to deliver both depth and freshness on the palate.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.
