Description

Black Springs is a young vineyard with a big future. Simon Grant helped establish it back in 2016 on a friend’s property at 450 metres in Beechworth, where decomposed granite soils and cool nights give Nebbiolo a natural tension and lift. Until now, the fruit has been blended into the estate wine, but in 2023 the block showed enough maturity to stand on its own.

Fermented in concrete and raised in ceramic eggs, there’s no oak to blur the detail. What you get is a strikingly aromatic Nebbiolo—rose petals, sour cherry, grapefruit peel and spice - with a palate that’s both generous and finely etched. The tannins are unmistakably Nebbiolo, firm and architectural, yet here they’re cushioned by a core of red fruit and savoury depth that makes the wine already compelling to drink.

For a first solo outing, this is seriously impressive. It captures the perfume and energy of young Beechworth Nebbiolo while giving a glimpse of the complexity and harmony that will only build as the vines age. Simon says it best: “Without the interference of oak you see both the purity of fruit and the plush unadorned tannin framework.”

A brilliant debut from a site we’ll be hearing much more about.

"Ripe dark cherry, dark florals and raspberry lead an invitingly aromatic opening, with woodsmoke and earthy paperbark beneath... Classy and perfumed with excellent structure."

94 points - "Ripe dark cherry, dark florals and raspberry lead an invitingly aromatic opening, with woodsmoke and earthy paperbark beneath. A swirl of the glass unlocks a saline savouriness along with tar and gentle star anise. The palate is packed with alluring ripe red florals, dark cherry, raspberry and ripe red apple before ribbons of stacked, powdery tannins constrict the mouth for a coiled, precise and floral finish. Classy and perfumed with excellent structure. Fermented in concrete and raised in ceramic for around 12 months." - Tom Kline (Decanter)

Traviarti

After a career in wine industry on the buying, selling and marketing side of things Simon Grant decided to move towards the making of wine, and focused almost solely on his main love, Nebbiolo.

He found a high altitude site just above Beechworth in Victoria, sitting at 600m, which he planted to various clones of Nebbiolo, looking to create a wine of power and complexity.

Some Tempranillo and Chardonnay are also released, as well a good value Rosso, but great Australian Nebbiolo is still the prime motivator.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
