Description

The 2023 Vigna Cantina Trebbiano brings a fresh perspective to Barossa’s diverse vineyard history. Sourced from 120-year-old vines in Koonunga Hill, this wine highlights the region’s lesser-seen varietals and Dominic Torzi’s deft winemaking touch.

Organically farmed and handpicked, the Trebbiano grapes were fermented on skins for eight days before being basket-pressed to seasoned French oak barrels for eight months. This approach adds depth and texture while keeping the wine’s vibrant, citrus-driven energy intact.

Bright aromas of stone fruits, lemon verbena, and a subtle saline note lead into a palate that’s layered with zesty lemon, grapefruit, and hints of almond. Its texture is both refreshing and complex, with a savoury, saline finish that lingers.

Perfect for pairing with seafood or light dishes, it’s a wine that balances flavour, structure, and drinkability—proof that Barossa can do so much more than Shiraz.

"What a great wine. White peach, aniseed, ripe lemon like the proper Italian ones where you can eat the skin kind of deal, peanuts, lemon verbena. It’s bright and laden with sweet lemon and grapefruit, plenty of tang and energy, peppery powdery tannin grip, saline and savoury, with a pithy finish of excellent length. Almonds in the aftertaste."

"This has personality, like the great Abruzzo Trebbiano. It spends 8 days on skins and 8 months in old oak, which is just enough to pick up a golden, lemon walnut chewy pull with preserved lemon, lemon balm and this lemony phenolic tang. It’s throaty but crisp, full-flavoured and obviously intense yet not heavy. $28 for this? Ridiculous."

94+ points - "There was no 2022 vintage produced due to frost. Anyway, 120-year-old vines with 8 days of skin contact. Aged in seasoned hogsheads. What a great wine. Almonds in the aftertaste. Perhaps a little more frisky and nervous than the 2021, though I’d suggest time will be very kind to it." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Vintage: A lovely, mild vintage for the Barossa, allowing flavors to slowly build with excellent acid retention, achieving its electric styling. The old vine Trebbiano showcased small, loose bunches of yellow nectar to produce another lovely, textural table wine of character.

Winemaking: Handpicked and crushed into small 500kg fermenters for 8 days on skins, then basket pressed to seasoned French oak for 8 months to build texture, weight, and complexity.

A lovely, energetic, and very complex dry style with lifted stone fruits, citrus florals, and grapefruit. Flavors of zesty lemon, nuts, grapefruit, and stone fruits persist to a savory saline finish. Enjoy with shellfish and white meats, or embrace it on its own.

Torzi Matthews

Some years back, noted Australian wine writer Philip White called Domenic Torzi 'Australia's Best Bargain Winemaker'. Today, that statement still could not be more accurate.

The wines from Dom Torzi and Tracy Matthews are some of the best buys in the Barossa Valley and the country. Alongside their excellent classic range of old vine Barossa Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling, they make a small amount of fascinating Italian variety wines, inspired by their Italian heritage.

At every price point, these wines hugely and consistently overdeliver and are simply a must-buy for any lover of honest, delicious Barossan wines.

"You’d have to put Dom Torzi’s Torzi Matthews wines into the ‘some of best value/most consistent wines in the country’ list, right near the shiny top. A touch of magic. An eye on drinkability. Considered vineyard sources. Gentle overlay of winemaking. He gets it. Really gets it." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
