Description

The Woodcutter’s Shiraz has long been Torbreck’s calling card – a wine that captures the heart of Barossa Shiraz without the heavy price tag. Fruit comes from a mix of old, dry-grown vineyards across the north and west of the Valley, some with vines over a century old. It’s the kind of fruit that doesn’t need dressing up – just respect and a light touch.

The 2023 vintage was mild and steady, giving Shiraz that ripened slowly with great colour and freshness. Fermented in open vats, basket-pressed and matured in a mix of large-format and seasoned French oak, it’s made to show the vineyard character first and foremost.

It’s plush and fragrant, full of black and blue fruits, spice and a little earth. The palate is rich but balanced – generous flavour, smooth texture, and fine, savoury tannins pulling it neatly into line. It’s classic Barossa from one of the region’s masters, offering way more depth and polish than you’d ever expect at this level.

The 2023 Woodcutter's Shiraz is perfumed and vital with garden rose, pomegranate, raspberry, blood plum and tapenade. The wine is rich and flavorsome, and it accurately delivers the Barossa message encased in ferruginous tannins and bloody, earthy fruit. It's excellent and a great value for money at under $29 AUD/USD. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

A refined yet savory nose of blackcurrants, wild blackberries, mocha and iodine. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of mulberry bush, olive tapenade and ferric earth. Very chewy and structured with an underlying freshness. Delicious.

You’d imagine a high country Scottish woodcutter might like a satisfying red at the days end – something rich, warming, full bodied and affordable.

This wine reflects the up and coming Shiraz vineyards of the Barossa, rather than the battle hardened old vines that make up the core of our other cuvées.

But like all Torbreck wines, Woodcutter’s Shiraz receives the very best viticultural and winemaking treatment. Fruit is sourced from hand-harvested and hand-tended, low-yielding vines, then open fermented and gently basket pressed before ageing on fine lees for 12 months in large format seasoned barrels and foudres.

Although this wine is constantly praised for its succulence and richness, there is also a complexity and texture which is rarely found at this price.

Vintage Summary (2023)

The 2023 growing season brought above-average rainfall in winter and spring and a cooler summer. The majority of the harvest tookplace in the colder months, and most vineyards were not harvested until April, approximately one month later than usual.

Cooler seasons can pose several challenges, but through our dedicated commitment to viticulture practices, such as hand pruning and harvesting withcareful soil management, the vintage resulted in low-yielding and resilient fruit. The vintage has resulted in very strong wines from the Eden and Barossa Valleys, with bright colours and freshness from highe rnatural acidities, auguring them towards greater longevity and detail across the palate.

Winemaking

Torbreck Woodcutter’s Shiraz is sourced from younger Barossa Valley vineyards and showcases the region’s hallmark richness in a more approachable style. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in small open-top fermenters with daily pump-overs to enhance colour and structure. After basket pressing, the wine is matured for 12 months in a combination of seasoned French oak barriques and foudres.

Bottled unfined and unfiltered, Woodcutter’s Shiraz is plush and expressive, with dark berry fruit, subtle spice, and a rounded, velvety finish.

Tasting Note

Crimson with black cherry core. An alluring nose of red and black fruits such as dried red currant, black cherry and red plum. There’s inviting secondary notes of Chinese five spice, cinnamon bark and white pepper. A cooler year than typical with longer picking times the wine shows a degree of freshness and fragrance than warmer years. Soft and enveloping, the silky tannins provides a warm and supple mouthfeel offering excellent length and depth. Enjoy from release or cellar for 5-10 years. Serve at 16C/64F and match with most cuisines.
