Description

Torbreck’s Cuvée Juveniles is all about showing the Barossa’s old-vine fruit in a generous, unpretentious way, and the 2023 release hits that mark perfectly. It’s a classic blend of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz, sourced from some of the Valley’s oldest dry-grown vineyards – the kind of sites that give intensity without heaviness.

The vintage was mild and steady, allowing each variety to ripen slowly and evenly. Fermented gently and matured in older oak to preserve brightness, this wine is all about freshness and flow. Nothing overworked, nothing out of place.

In the glass, it’s plush and aromatic – red fruits from Grenache, spice and savoury depth from Mataro, a bit of Shiraz weight tying it all together. The palate is smooth, medium-bodied and lively, with fine tannins and just the right amount of grip. It’s the kind of Barossa red you don’t have to overthink – just open, pour, and enjoy.

Vibrant and lifted aromas of wild blackberries, raspberries, tobacco leaves and ferric earth. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and focused acidity, giving notes of blackberries, dried herbs and cured meat. Fresh with a savory undertone. A blend of 48% grenache, 28% mataro, 13% carignan, 6% counoise and 5% shiraz.

The 2023 Cuvee Juveniles is a blend of 48% Grenache, 28% Mataro, 13% Carignan, 6% Counoise and 5% Shiraz, and like the Cuvee Juveniles Blanc, is named after the wine bar for which it was created, Juveniles Wine Bar in the 1st arrondissement in Paris. The wine is savory and fresh, perfumed with abundant red fruits, flowers and exotic spices. In the mouth, you get star anise, fennel seeds, black peppercorns and fresh blood, and the mouthfeel is shaped by ferruginous tannins. While this wine may not be as complex as some others in the lineup, it lacks nothing in the way of freshness, personality and detail. It's a beautiful wine, from a cool and wet season in the Barossa. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

A blend of 48/28/13/6/5% grenache/mataro/carignan/counoise/shiraz from vineyards in Lyndoch, Gomersal, Seppeltsfield, Marananga and Greenock. I guess this is the wine that started it all. It's a Côtes du Rhône blend, sharply priced, with a connection to a famous Parisian wine bar; a juicy plum and spice-forward wine that is a joy to drink. Light on the artefact and high in effortless drinkability, finishing stony, spicy, meaty and moreish. A classic.

The wines hallmark is its freshness due to old oak ageing and as the name describes it is a wine best drunk in its youth, poured by the glass at your favourite restaurant.

Cuvée Juveniles was created as a ‘Cotes Du Rhone’ inspired bistro wine from the classic Barossa varieties of Grenache & Mataro (Mourvedre) from mostly unirrigated old vine vineyards.

Alongside these three Barossa cornerstones, Torbreck has planted two other traditional Rhone varieties: Counoise and Carignan. These give savoury and spicy notes to the blend, and add a level of complexity, depth and bottle ageing potential. A wine that will enthuse the Francophile yet still win over Barossa fans.

Vintage Summary (2023)

The 2023 growing season brought above-average rainfall in winter and spring and a cooler summer. The majority of the harvest tookplace in the colder months, and most vineyards were not harvested until April, approximately one month later than usual.

Cooler seasons can pose several challenges, but through our dedicated commitment to viticulture practices, such as hand pruning and harvesting withcareful soil management, the vintage resulted in low-yielding and resilient fruit. The vintage has resulted in very strong wines from the Eden and Barossa Valleys, with bright colours and freshness from highe rnatural acidities, auguring them towards greater longevity and detail across the palate.

Winemaking

Cuvée Juveniles is a Grenache-based blend inspired by the fresh, bistro-style wines of the Rhône Valley. Grenache, Mataro, Carignan, Counoise and Shiraz are sourced from key Barossa vineyards, the fruit is hand-harvested and fermented in small open-top fermenters using indigenous yeasts.. The wine is basket pressed and matured in a mix of stainless steels and older French oak foudre for 12 months. After blending the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Cuvée Juveniles is vibrant and expressive, showcasing red fruit, spice, and supple tannins in a medium-bodied frame.

Tasting Note

Magenta with a bright ruby hue. A perennial favourite, Grenache from old vines shows its ability to exhibit lifted florals, juicy red fruit characters such as red cherry, red currant along with boysenberry and secondary notes of white pepper. The addition of Rhone varietals Counoise and Carignan add a savoury and spicy complexity. Mataro adds aromas of beef jerky and Chinese five spice. The palate exhibits a medium-bodied texture with long acidity balancing a fruit freshness around a slightly firmer tannin frame than previous vintages. Serve with an array of cuisines including spicy Asian or Mexican dishes at or below 14C/58F. Enjoy from release -7 years.
