Description

Pepper and spice and everything nice.. Not lyrics to a song (though they could be), rather a fairly apt description of this Victorian GSM, from the Rory who created the Story.

There is not a whole lot of Mourvedre in the Grampians, however Rory managed to get his hands on a really nice small parcel of fruit, that really rounds out this wine. While the Shiraz component brings the fruit and mid-palate heft here, it’s the interplay between the Grenache and Mourvedre that really makes this wine sing. Super pretty nose, a smoky spice element, that aforementioned mid-palate fruit, all lead to a fresh finish, enhanced by that cool-climate natural acidity.

This is a really nice alternative to the GSM wines we see from SA, a bit lighter in frame, fresher in feel, yet still with full-throttle flavour and aromatics.

"This is a beautiful wine to drink, modern and characterful at once... This is a yes."

No new oak and 10% whole bunches. This is a beautiful wine to drink, modern and characterful at once, clean but with plenty going on. Black pepper, black cherry, boysenberry, hazelnut and mezcal characters depict a wine that is both fruity and savoury at once; terracotta tannins then draw classily through the finish. This is a yes.

The Real Review 93 Points

Cool, fragrant and lifted aromas of briar, blueberry, sap, spice, white pepper, Campari and dried flowers. Bright, crunchy, punchy and snappy in flavour. Blue fruits, cranberry, sweet spice, bramble and perky acidity are all at play. Long, textured, mid-weight, lively and quite delicious drinking

Firm, fruity, smoky and savoury at once. Excellent wine. Black pepper and boysenberry characters meet woodsmoke, hazelnuts and (whole-bunch) herbs. Tannin framework is excellent – both dry and stony – and well-spied fruit continues confidently on through the finish.

Super G is our 'Rhoney' nod to super tuscans, playing with varieties generally not seen in a region dominated by one variety. The Grampians is planted to over 80% Shiraz/Syrah, and we have access to some of the only Grenache and Mourvedre vineyards in the region.

Grenache from Arrawatta Vineyard at low elevation just south of Great Western, a little more Grenache from our own Moyston Hills in the south (about half a tonne) and Mourvedre from our Moyston Hills vineyard as well.

The Syrah component is this year from Moyston Hills, adding more pepper than usual. Grenache and Mourvedre are destemmed and Syrah is fermented with some whole bunches, so that the final cuvee is around 10% whole bunches this year. Natural ferments and around 3 weeks on skins with pump overs every second day. We generally use an 'infusion' style, restricting manual manipulation of the cap to the bare minimum. From there the wine spends 8 months only in a combination of old puncheons, 1000lt oak vat and a couple of older french hogsheads.

A fine, cool vintage not dissimilar in heat and rain to 21, but seemingly more red fruited, more tannin complexity and more rotundone. It will take a little longer to unfurl, but should be a very classy medium term wine.

The Story

Rory Lane, the main man at The Story, didn't have an entirely conventional path to the wine world. With a degree in ancient Greek tragedy, comparative literature, and politics, he stumbled into winemaking and found he had more than a knack for it.

Since 2004, he's been tinkering with predominantly Rhône varieties in the Grampians, turning out some unique expressions from this Shiraz-heavy region. His winery is located in the city suburbs of Melbourne, not your typical winery setting, but it suits him down to a tee.

Rory's winemaking philosophy is to keep it relatively simple and hands-off. Grapes arrive, get gently processed, and then are left to their own devices with minimal interference. No additives, no excessive tinkering. Just good, solid, classic winemaking producing some exceptional value wines.
