Description

TarraWarra has been quietly nailing Pinot since long before the Yarra became cool again. This isn’t about flashy labels or trophy-hunting; it’s about thoughtful, site-driven winemaking that’s been part of the estate’s DNA since the early ’80s.

The 2023 vintage gave them a small crop but some seriously good fruit. It’s got all the hallmarks you want: bright red cherries, a little raspberry lift, hints of violets, and just enough savoury edge to keep it interesting. There’s a plushness to the palate - not heavy, just beautifully supple - with fine tannins and a flicker of cranberry acidity that gives it shape. You get depth without weight, a quiet intensity that doesn’t need to shout to be heard.

No need to lay this down for a decade, though it’ll happily stretch out over a few years. Right now, it’s just a pleasure to drink - the kind of Pinot that makes you want to linger at the table a bit longer, maybe even open a second bottle.

93 points - "TarraWarra Estate Pinot Noir has had its good days and its lesser, like all long-term wine labels, though it’s usually tended towards the heftier side of the pinot noir varietal spectrum. This release of TarraWarra Pinot Noir feels as though it has taken a confident step towards the modern world of Australian pinot noir. This is silken and fresh, with cherry-strawberry fruit as the drivers and perfect balance through the finish. Cedarwood oak plays a role for sure, but the wine in general just feels so well finished. A spicy savouriness runs in tandem with the fruit, smoky bacon notes playing there too. This wine, as with all the TarraWarra releases this year, is one that you just want to hook into." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

92 points - "Very good depth of colour, purple in the rim, and aromas of dark cherry to plum, with good depth of fruit and a touch of richness and fleshiness. The wine is deep and plush on the palate with ample fine-grained tannins and pleasing balance, the aftertaste lingering on satisfyingly. A very smart pinot noir with a future." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

A small but high quality vintage. A cool spring followed by a mild and wet growing season saw low yields. This gave us lovely fruit concentration, depth of flavour and balanced acidities.

Expressive and nuanced nose, featuring vibrant notes of raspberry, violets & red cherries. Silky texture with bright red berry flavours complemented by notes of cranberry & pomegranate. An elegant and persistent finish.
