Description

Tarrawarra Estate is one of the few Yarra Valley producers that has gotten a handle on some Italian varieties. While Pinot Noir is the region's calling card, Tarrawarra’s north-west facing slopes provide the perfect sun-trap for Barbera, a grape that thrives on the warmth.

The 2023 vintage was a low-yield, high-quality season. A cool spring followed by a mild growing period resulted in fruit with serious concentration and a natural, crunchy acidity. Winemaker Sarah Fagan has kept the winemaking simple: hand-harvested fruit, fully destemmed, and aged in seasoned French oak puncheons for seven months. By avoiding new oak, the pure, high-toned fruit is the hero.

This is a classic "pizza and pasta" red, leading with bright raspberry, cranberry, and dark plum notes. It’s medium-bodied and supple, but with some firmness to the finish that gives it real shape and food-friendliness. While it’s fresh and moreish right now, the depth of flavour from the '23 season means it has the bones to develop more savoury complexity over the next five years.

95 points - "Fruit from 35-year-old vines. Fermented in foudre and matured in French barrels (10% new). A gorgeous crimson red announces another top notch TarraWarra barbera. With its seductive bouquet of dark cherry, lavender, nutmeg and wood spice, this medium-bodied, tasty, gently wrought and well-balanced wine will look even better 2-3 years from now." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

Not for us

We tried out hand at getting some cheaper mid-week wine. This fell into our dozen. High alcohol left an unpleasant aftertaste. This one is not for us.

A real surprise packet

Lovely red wine. Food versatile. Rather Italianate. Soft and ready to go.

Season Notes:
A small but high quality vintage. A cool spring followed by a mild and wet growing season saw low yields. This gave us lovely fruit concentration, depth of flavour and balanced acidities.

Harvested
Hand harvested on 23rd & 24th March, 2023.
Winemaking
The fruit was hand harvested and destemmed into open fermenters. Thoughtful ferment handling was used to encourage balanced flavour, acidity and tannin structure. The wine was blended post oak maturation in November, for bottling in early February, 2024.
Oak
Matured in French oak Puncheons and Barriques for 7 months.
No new oak.
Cellaring
Will drink well now, and will continue to develop further complexity over the next 5-10 years.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
