Description

Patience was the name of the game for the 2023 Barossa harvest - rain at the wrong time, picking stretching out longer than usual, and plenty of nail-biting decisions. But for The Schubert Theorem, that patience has paid off handsomely. Dan Standish knows this vineyard inside out. He spent eight years figuring out its quirks before he even bottled the first vintage.

This year’s Schubert feels deeper, a little more brooding, with a savoury edge that keeps it honest. There’s that trademark marine note, a salty, iodine thread that weaves through the dense black and blue fruits. Think mulberry compote, a hint of graphite, maybe a whiff of nori if you’re paying attention. The tannins are silky but firm enough to keep everything in line, and the acidity’s got a lovely lift.

An epic Schubert, maybe not the full throttle power of some warmer years but it maybe the most elegant rendition of this cuvee yet from Dan. Compelling wine, really about as good as Barossa Shiraz gets, from our point of view. You know is going to age beautifully but geez, it's going to be hard to leave it alone.

"The 2023 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz is a gorgeous wine. It is silky, inky, pure, black as the ace of spades and long through the finish... It has rose petals, detail and delicacy, power and precision... The ancient terroir of the Barossa is writ large in these wines. It is striking."

"The purest of plum, black cherry and blueberry fruits stretch impossibly long on the palate... smooth tannins, spice and texture compose a kinetic, graceful wine."

98 points - "The 2023 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz is a gorgeous wine. It is silky, inky, pure, black as the ace of spades and long through the finish. The use of concrete egg in the fermentation/maturation stages lends the wine a sense of purity and finesse. It supports a core of crystalline fruit that is wrapped in earthy, grainy tannin and woven together with threads of saline acidity. It has rose petals, detail and delicacy, power and precision. Standish performs somewhat like a Burgundian producer—he works with one grape (I suppose two, if you count the small inclusion of Viognier in the Relic) to express different vineyard sites, soil types and elevations. There's no "declassified" fruit in these wines, no flow-on opportunities to other cuvées, just "make or break" viticulture and winemaking. The ancient terroir of the Barossa is writ large in these wines. It is striking. This 2023 Schubert, despite the cool and wet conditions, is a testament to Standish's clarity of vision. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

98 points - "The '23 release of the Schubert Theorem is just gorgeous. It's kinetic. The purest of plum, black cherry and blueberry fruits stretch impossibly long on the palate, with impressive density and a real sense of grace to its travel. The edges are smooth and round here and there is a calmness as it glides across the palate, the tannins more in the powdery spectrum (and I'm sure this comes from the portion that spends its gestation in a concrete Nomblot egg). Bunch (50% or thereabouts) is bang on here, lending a golden ratio of spice, sinew and texture. But man, that pure rolling swell of fruit is the star; this is a wonderfully composed wine." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

92+ points - "Raspberry conserve, toasty oak, red capsicum, spice, tobacco and chocolate. Deep and rich wine, quite toasty with roasted coffee bean flavour, blackberry and blueberry, quite some sandy grip to tannin, orange peel, dark and spicy on a finish of good, but drying, length. 92+ points." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

93 points - "Bold, meaty and very concentrated. An inward concentration to infinity with blackberry coulis, prune and fig, date and salted Brazil nuts, dark chocolate drinking powder, roasted capsicum and beetroot with lots of clove and bitter herbs. Very firm tannin profile, drying, powdery finish with a wall of chalky pucker. A kind of oafish nature to the wine, a sticky richness and palate-staining overtness. The finish a touch bitter with smoky tannin. Character, intensity, for sure. Not quite to the pace and finesse of past releases, but worthy for impact. 93 points." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

    Outstanding!!!

The Standish wines are now my favorites to come out of the Barossa! 2021 is a great vintage, in particular for the Schubert's Theorem. It's a big wine that has been brilliantly crafted and even though it very enjoyable now, this wine at 10-20 years will be about as good as a shiraz can get in this country. Balanced to perfection !

    Cracking Release for Standish

2018 is a superb release for Standish wines. Truly over delivers on price vs quality. The Schubert will cellar for decades. A lengthy decant is required if opened now. Drinks darker, stalkier and creamier compared to the the normal Standish. A different expression of deliciousness.

Patience is not merely waiting for something to happen but the ability to maintain a positive attitude during that time.
Patience was fundamental to the 2023 harvest in the Barossa, with the grape picking extending well into May, almost a month later than average.

As grape growers we are farmers and as the saying goes, we always have “one eye on the sky”. Habitually hoping for more rain in our parched landscape, at this critical time of year prior to harvest however, rain is the antagonist.

The ripening phase saw a handful of pesky precipitation events each of which arrived with vexatious timing. To harvest or not to harvest? The repeated question, each time.

The Risk – pick too early and risk thin green under ripe grapes or too late and risk dilute flavours or to lose the entire crop at the hands of fungal diseases or split berries.

The Gain – an extra week or two of sunshine and photosynthesis to increase tannin and anthocyanin in the grape’s seeds and stalks. Ripe and complex grape flavours.

The Results (with Patience):
This gentle elongated ripening creating a special vintage giving us wines of great lusciousness and complexity. Crunchy forefront tannins from the grape skins in conjunction with mellow rounder toning, mouth filling tannin from riper grape seeds. Grip and drive from the lignified stalks alongside the invigorating natural acidity retained due to the cool season, all harmonising to give billowy flow and incredible intricacy.
Some of our most complex and captivating wines to date.

Patience; risky, perhaps – worthwhile, definitely!

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
