Description

The 2023 vintage had its fair share of curveballs with rain just when you didn’t want it, waiting for grapes to decide they were ready, a few extra weeks hanging on the vine. But for The Relic, that patience paid off. This is Dan’s showstopper Shiraz Viognier blend, where Barossa meets Côte-Rôtie, and it’s got his old-vine fruit front and centre.

Every swirl of the glass brings a new layer - there’s a bit of sea salt, a touch of iodine, that inky, black-as-night core you can’t quite get enough of. Dark fruits creep in, but at their own pace, unfolding slowly. It’s got this silky, almost slippery feel to it, the tannins measured just right to let the fruit do the talking. The classic glycerol/glossyness from the Viognier judged beautifully this yet. 'Sexy' is a word that immediately comes to mind when tasting the 2023. Oooof.

Clearly not the easiest vintage to get this level of ripeness and balance but Dan’s experience shows. He’s walked the line between power and grace here. It’s a wine that’s both commanding and composed, destined to stick around for decades if you can wait that long. It's a bottle that’ll make you rethink what Barossa Shiraz Viognier can do.

"What more is there to say about this, other than that it is sensational? I find this to be an incredibly consistent wine year after year, with my scores rarely deviating too much from "excellent." This is among the very best Shiraz Viognier's in this country; it's a treasure."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

"Dark plum, cherry and stone fruit with an exotically spiced trail... powdered tannins and intricate, balanced detail. Tremendous drinking."

"Perfume, silky texture, glossiness, charm and drinkability... Multi-dimensional in its feel with its extreme length, almost bouncy texture, grip of very fine, quality tannin and sense of refreshment to finish. A dusting of white pepper lingers. Concentration and compact nature. Class."

98 points - "The 2023 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier is texturally velvety and smooth; that may sound like a base observation to make, and perhaps it is, but the experience is overwhelmingly silky/ethereal this year. Apricot blossoms, sweet roasted bone marrow, hung deli meat, crushed rocks, licorice, anise and raspberry mingle in the glass, while the palate gives us these characters tenfold, bolstered and grounded by savory tannins. What more is there to say about this, other than that it is sensational? I find this to be an incredibly consistent wine year after year, with my scores rarely deviating too much from "excellent." This is among the very best Shiraz Viognier's in this country; it's a treasure. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

97 points - "The Relic, 98.5/1.5% shiraz/viognier is sourced from the Hongell Family vineyard in Krondorf and immediately presents itself beautifully with dark and red plum, dark cherry and indeed, a stone fruit component that sits obliquely to the deeper fruit on display. A smaller percentage of whole bunch this year but an exotically spiced trail is still apparent in the wine, like fading footsteps in wet sand. There's a char siu meaty aspect in the mix, too, with dried meadow flowers and a real sense of place; the tannins are like powdered sand and there is a sapidness apparent in its cadence. There's only a handful of producers in the region that produce wines with this level of intricacy. It's like bonsai winemaking, capturing nature and all its harvest-borne detail with a sense of balance and proportion. Tremendous drinking." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "A pop and pour taste had me excited. Perfume, silky texture, glossiness, charm and drinkability. Fine tannin profile in a sheath of silky draw, white pepper, rosy floral lift, dried rose petal indeed, with touches of stone fruit in concentrated forest berry compote and tart, red plum character. Multi-dimensional in its feel with its extreme length, almost bouncy texture, grip of very fine, quality tannin and sense of refreshment to finish. A dusting of white pepper lingers. Concentration and compact nature. Class. 96 points." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

94 points - "I like this straight off. Blue and purple fruit, pepper and spice, perfume, roast beef. It’s medium to full-bodied, spicy with sweet blue fruit, Turkish apricot, a fine polishing sandpaper sort of feel to tannin, a coolness to acidity, meaty, crisp and lightly sappy to close on a finish of good length. A lighter vintage, though a charming one that drinks well. 94 points" - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Another Standish Conversation-Stopper

If I were told I could only drink one wine for the rest of my life, or only stock one grower in my cellar, it would be any of the quartet of show-stopping wines from Standish. I have served this at dinners without fanfare and it has stopped conversations mid-sentence. Deserving of the high praise it regularly receives from professional reviewers including the 99 points from Robert Parker and James Suckling for the 2020 vintage. While every vintage is subtly different, the impact on your guests is always be the same. They are amazing drinking immediately and will also reward those who can delay their gratification!

Cannot go wrong with Standish! Love it!

Patience is not merely waiting for something to happen but the ability to maintain a positive attitude during that time.
Patience was fundamental to the 2023 harvest in the Barossa, with the grape picking extending well into May, almost a month later than average.

As grape growers we are farmers and as the saying goes, we always have “one eye on the sky”. Habitually hoping for more rain in our parched landscape, at this critical time of year prior to harvest however, rain is the antagonist.

The ripening phase saw a handful of pesky precipitation events each of which arrived with vexatious timing. To harvest or not to harvest? The repeated question, each time.

The Risk – pick too early and risk thin green under ripe grapes or too late and risk dilute flavours or to lose the entire crop at the hands of fungal diseases or split berries.

The Gain – an extra week or two of sunshine and photosynthesis to increase tannin and anthocyanin in the grape’s seeds and stalks. Ripe and complex grape flavours.

The Results (with Patience):
This gentle elongated ripening creating a special vintage giving us wines of great lusciousness and complexity. Crunchy forefront tannins from the grape skins in conjunction with mellow rounder toning, mouth filling tannin from riper grape seeds. Grip and drive from the lignified stalks alongside the invigorating natural acidity retained due to the cool season, all harmonising to give billowy flow and incredible intricacy.
Some of our most complex and captivating wines to date.

Patience; risky, perhaps – worthwhile, definitely!

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
