Description

The Grainery has become one of the most distinctive white wines in Canberra – Bryan Martin’s Rhône-inspired blend of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. What makes it special is the way Bryan builds texture and shape without ever letting the wine feel heavy. Whole bunch ferments, time on skins, and a long élevage in demi-muids and foudre give it layers, but there’s always a line of freshness pulling it through.

The 2023 vintage is led by Viognier (48%) with Marsanne (32%) and Roussanne (20%) filling in the detail. A cooler season means a brighter, zippier edge to the usual stone fruit, ginger and honeyed notes. There’s lemon curd, orange rind, and a gentle floral lift, all wrapped in a savoury, textural frame. It’s complex, yes, but also very drinkable – the kind of wine you keep coming back to because it doesn’t give everything away at once.

This will age gracefully for a decade or more, though it’s already showing beautifully now. A standout for anyone who loves white wines with shape, savour and food-friendliness – proof that Ravensworth sits in a class of its own when it comes to textural blends.

The Wine Front 94 Points

All the nuts and brine, an amontillado kind of note with light, washy green apple fruit, lime juice, a gently sweet lemony profile, nashi pear too. Lots of character emerges in the lighter, looser knit frame here, but the wine ends up compelling for that savoury twist and the overall impression is a wine to savour, or to use as final condiment in the glass for something substantial on the table. Serious wine.

    Great Alternative White

I'm slowly drinking through the Ravensworth range and have yet to find a wine I don't love. The Grainery was such a great alternative white. Savoury with some citrus coming through. We finished this bottle in record time!

    This is one my favs

Always a nice wine and will cellar

Our Rhone white belnd this year is dominated by Viognier (48%) then Marsanne (32%) and Roussanne (20%)

A cooler year has given the wine a nice zesty acidity and more delicate flavours.

Stone fruit, ginger, lemon curd, orange rind and honeysuckle. A lot going on here

Fermented and matured in foudre for two years

Ravensworth

Bryan Martin is one of the most creative and inquisitive winemakers we've ever met. After leaving his position as winemaker alongside Tim Kirk at Canberra regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, Bryan went full steam in on his own label Ravensworth, which has firmly hit cult status amongst collectors.

He and his wife Jocelyn have a beautiful property outside of Murrumbateman which is home to all of their excellent Estate wines and Bryan also searches surrounding vineyards and out to the Hilltops region to compile his excellent value Regional series of wines. Sustainability and an unwavering commitment to quality across the board underpin the entire operation at Ravensworth. Perhaps best known for his benchmark Shiraz Viognier and textural Rieslings, Bryan is also arguably the country's best producer of Sangiovese and is a true master of the dark art of skin-contact whites.

Bryan embodies everything we love about small artisanal Australian producers. He is humble, irreverent, committed to the pursuit of excellence and always looking to explore. Quite simply, if you see a Ravensworth wine anywhere, you should buy it.
