Description

Few winemakers know Shiraz Viognier like Bryan Martin. He spent years at Clonakilla helping shape Australia’s most famous example of the style, and for nearly two decades he’s been honing his own version under the Ravensworth label. Today, his estate-grown Shiraz Viognier is one of Canberra’s most talked-about wines.

The 2023 vintage shows why. It’s cool-climate Shiraz at its most captivating: floral, spicy and red-fruited, lifted by just a whisper of Viognier. That small addition isn’t about perfume alone – Bryan uses it to shape the palate, giving the wine a silky, seamless feel that’s become a hallmark of Ravensworth.

This is a wine that feels effortlessly together even in youth, with layers of cherry, spice and dried flowers already meshing beautifully. The structure is fine and long, suggesting a decade in the cellar will only add complexity, though it’s dangerously drinkable now with lamb or anything fragrant and spiced.

Production is small – only 700 dozen made – and demand is high. If you’re serious about Shiraz Viognier, this belongs in your collection.

A subtle, spicy, slick red of washy raspberry fruit character, wet leaf and undergrowth characters, some brambly blackberry notes, white mushroom, black pepper and peppery sage leaf characters. It feels like viognier is a very back note here, the vintage out and proud in diffuse nature and spread of flavours, plus the greenery found here, but in all that, a kind of pinosity, pleasing swish of texture and cool finish. One can comment on the watery nature of the wine, for sure, so a caveat, but pleasure rises here too.

Medium purple-ruby in appearance, with white pepper spice on the nose for days... Fruit too: red cherry, redcurrant, blueberry, violet florals, herbal notes, hints of menthol. It's medium-bodied in a classical cool-climate way, with juicy weight and grip and a juniper spice thread. Layers and layers of texture and interest. It's light on its feet and an excellent choice for the Australian summer.

    Power and grace

Slightly different to previous vintages but in a good way. Lots of lovely spice and texture form the viognier coupled with a powdery tannin structure, and silky mouthfeel.

    Super consistent

Always a treat to open one of these. Lush fruit with some soft spicy things going on, really lovely drink.

    Review Ravensworth Shiraz Viognier

Absolutely delicious! Wish I could drink it every day… but is a perfect wine for a slow cooked lamb or beef dish. I’m cellaring one bottle for as long as I can. Keen to try more from this vineyard.

Our beautiful, perfumed, cool-grown Shiraz with that seasoning of viognier that seems to bring the wine to life.

Coming up to 20 years since we got our first crop and you can see it in the wine, a rising complexity of aroma, flavour and texture.

Super aromatic floral, spice and red fruit, silky texture. Just seems so together as a young wine but we know they gracefully age and generally recommend a 7-10 year window.

Technical Notes
Ravensworth Shiraz Viognier
Collection: Estate
Vintage: 2023
GI: Canberra District
Vineyard source: Estate
Harvest date: Late April
Processing: Processed to 15% whole bunch, the rest whole berry in 10hl fermenters with indigenous yeast and bacteria biom. 3-6 weeks on skins. Pressed to new and used 228l French coopered barriques for one year then transferred to 27hl foudre for second year
Élevage: 2 years
Vessels: Francois Frere Foudre
Vintage conditions: 2023
Another cool year, very wet early that kept us on our toes in the vineyard. Was a year for patience, faith and gumboots.
Bottling date: May 2025
Production: 700 dozen
Cellaring: 10 years plus
Something interesting: The small percentage of viognier is added to change the palate rather than aromas. Viognier is thick skinned and has a different phenolic make up to Shiraz. The two work together to create the unique silky texture
Drink with: Lamb heavily flavoured with middle-eastern spices and herbs.

Ravensworth

Bryan Martin is one of the most creative and inquisitive winemakers we've ever met. After leaving his position as winemaker alongside Tim Kirk at Canberra regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, Bryan went full steam in on his own label Ravensworth, which has firmly hit cult status amongst collectors.

He and his wife Jocelyn have a beautiful property outside of Murrumbateman which is home to all of their excellent Estate wines and Bryan also searches surrounding vineyards and out to the Hilltops region to compile his excellent value Regional series of wines. Sustainability and an unwavering commitment to quality across the board underpin the entire operation at Ravensworth. Perhaps best known for his benchmark Shiraz Viognier and textural Rieslings, Bryan is also arguably the country's best producer of Sangiovese and is a true master of the dark art of skin-contact whites.

Bryan embodies everything we love about small artisanal Australian producers. He is humble, irreverent, committed to the pursuit of excellence and always looking to explore. Quite simply, if you see a Ravensworth wine anywhere, you should buy it.
