Description

Bryan Martin has always approached Riesling a little differently, and the Estate release shows just how far he’s pushed the style. This is no quick, squeaky-clean Riesling turned around in months – it’s a wine built with time, texture and patience at its core.

Estate-grown fruit was fermented in ceramic eggs, left undisturbed on lees for a full year, then transferred to large Stockinger foudre for another 12 months. That slow, careful élevage gives the wine a breadth and savoury texture you rarely see in Australian Riesling, while still keeping its spine of electric acidity.

The flavours are full and layered: lemon, green apple and spice, with subtle floral lift and a nutty, almost almond-like savouriness in the background. The palate is dry and driving, yet cushioned by that time-built texture – it’s zingy and mouth-watering but also feels grounded and complete.

Made in tiny quantities, this is one of Bryan’s most exciting releases to date. A Riesling that rewrites expectations: built to drink beautifully now, but with the structure to reward a decade or more in the cellar.

The Wine Front 93 Points

A pleasing, light golden colour, but noted. Scents and flavours of watery margarita, salt rim included, a big squeeze of lime on top of that, green apple, some waxy texture and flavours, lemon myrtle, that zing of citrusy sorrel with its leafiness (I just harvested some from my garden for lunch, and here it is!). There’s a good sense of friskiness despite the wash of texture, the finish broad but crackling with saline minerality. It’s nice, just not quite where the wine often gets to, but there’s a good drink here.

A lot goes into making this dry, textural style of riesling.

Mostly time. Time to develop flavour and texture. Time to allow the wine to settle under gravity rather than filtration.

A full flavoured style, lots of lemon, apples, spice with background almond and florals. Zingy acidity, yet has breadth through the palate.

Fermented in ceramic, matured for two years in foudre.

Another cool year, very wet early that kept us on our toes in the vineyard. Was a year for patience, faith and gumboots.
Bottling date: May 2025
Production: 210 dozen
Cellaring: 10 years plus
Something interesting: This wine is bone dry and unfiltered which is only possible as the long time on lees, skin-contact and warmer ferments has given the wine a lot more texture and settle out naturally. Most rieslings that are turned around in a couple of months haven't time to achieve this mouthfeel or clarity so generally have unfermented grape sugar added prior to filtration to fill the palette.

Ravensworth

Bryan Martin is one of the most creative and inquisitive winemakers we've ever met. After leaving his position as winemaker alongside Tim Kirk at Canberra regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, Bryan went full steam in on his own label Ravensworth, which has firmly hit cult status amongst collectors.

He and his wife Jocelyn have a beautiful property outside of Murrumbateman which is home to all of their excellent Estate wines and Bryan also searches surrounding vineyards and out to the Hilltops region to compile his excellent value Regional series of wines. Sustainability and an unwavering commitment to quality across the board underpin the entire operation at Ravensworth. Perhaps best known for his benchmark Shiraz Viognier and textural Rieslings, Bryan is also arguably the country's best producer of Sangiovese and is a true master of the dark art of skin-contact whites.

Bryan embodies everything we love about small artisanal Australian producers. He is humble, irreverent, committed to the pursuit of excellence and always looking to explore. Quite simply, if you see a Ravensworth wine anywhere, you should buy it.
