Description

Cooper Davis Draper and his partner Cat came back to Australia from Mexico in 2021, with only $600 in their pocket and a bottle of mezcal.

Cooper has spent the past few years building up winemaking experience across Australia, France and Canada, and he draws on all this knowledge for his new, emerging label, Oria-Riff.

This is their remarkable Barossa Semillon, hailing from a 50-year-old site in the sandy soils of the Vine Vale Barossa sub-region. It's a luscious, textural style of Semillon, aged in oak and raised for richness. Only one barrel made.

"Generous, hazy textured white of richer lemon spectrum flavours, bergamot tea, faint honeyed notes, lilts of saline freshness and attractive nutty-savoury elements. Finds kin with more expressive Loire chenin blanc or maybe even savagnin of Jura – exciting. Delicious, actually. The generosity may vex some, but lean in, the feast for the senses is the joy here. It’s complex, layered, moreish in its lusher elements and well balanced in its elements, despite its more overt nature. I’m so in."

The Oria~Riff Blanc this year is an old vine Sémillon coming from the sandy foot hills of Vine
Vale, in the Barossa Valley. These are 50+ year old vines that have been organically managed
for over a decade with a focus on dry farming and no till. The fruit was picked when it reached
a lime/honey spectrum and was simply fermented in 1 old hogshead barrel. After a 9 month
élevage it was gravity fed to a tank where it settled for a month prior to bottling. This is a wine
that surprisingly ended up being a richer and fuller rendition of Sémillon from a cool and wet
vintage. Its richness is balanced by fine acidity and looks great after being opened for many
days, it will last for many years to come.
