Description

Few winemakers in Australia understand Chardonnay like Dave Bicknell. Under his stewardship, Oakridge has become a benchmark for dsite-specific Chardonnay, each single-vineyard release a masterclass in how site and season shape the grape.

Hazeldene, planted in 2013 on the north-facing red volcanic slopes of Gladysdale, is one of his best sites. The cool, wet 2023 vintage brought tiny yields and a drawn-out ripening, gifting fruit with exceptional flavour and piercing natural acidity. Dave treats it with his trademark restraint: hand-picking, whole-bunch pressing, wild fermentation in 500L French oak puncheons, and 14 months on lees to build texture without blunting its purity.

The result is classic Bicknell - aromatics of white flowers, kaffir lime, flint and underripe stone fruit, a palate that’s taut and shimmering with lemon rind and peach, and an underlying mineral thread that hums through the finish. It’s a Chardonnay of tension, precision and authority - proof, once again, that in the hands of a master, the Yarra Valley can rival the world’s great white wine regions.

"Fans out beautifully on the long, saline and very satisfying palate. Terrific now, this should age superbly over the next five to 10 years."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Whenever the phrase ‘essence of chardonnay’ goes through my mind, it’s always good sign. Here it is... This is a long, scintillating chardonnay but there’s plenty going on along the way. A gentle/modest flintiness is the icing."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

96 points - "From chardonnay planted at the Hazeldene vineyard at Gladysdale in '13. Awarded the trophy for the Best White Wine at last year's Yarra Valley Wine Show, it's not hard to see why. Complex and full of energy with its bouquet of white peach, chalk, grilled nuts and a touch of flint. Fans out beautifully on the long, saline and very satisfying palate. Terrific now, this should age superbly over the next five to 10 years." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Whenever the phrase ‘essence of chardonnay’ goes through my mind, it’s always good sign. Here it is. The pear flavours here are so fresh that you can almost feel the grain and the skin of them; the peaches are of the white variety; the spice and oatmeal notes are infused with white flowers, the oak has an almost paste aspect. This is a long, scintillating chardonnay but there’s plenty going on along the way. A gentle/modest flintiness is the icing." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

We've enjoyed every Oakridge single vineyard wine - they're all great, as is this Hazeldene!

    Oakridge Chardonnay Never Disappoints

The Hazeldene chardonnay continues to be one of my favourite Australian chardonnays. Pear, a bit of spice and flintiness. Fantastic!

Will be excellent with some bottle age

Although drinking well now, I'll stash the remaining bottles away for a few years as this will flourish in time.

Oakridge

Oakridge is one of the Yarra Valley's most respected wineries.

Under the direction of master winemaker Dave Bicknell, it has been a major player in defining the modern styles of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Yarra over the last decade.

From the elite 864 range to the amazing value Over The Shoulder range, there's quality at the core of everything Oakridge puts its hand to. Bicknell has rare touch as a winemaker, carefully eeking out the individual character of each vineyard he works with.

Each wine speaks with absolute clarity of where it comes from. These are excellent, masterfully crafted wines and great value to boot.
