Description

"Nick Spencer is one of the better winemakers in this country.”
- Gary Walsh

"Australian wine can be a brash place, but it still manages to provide harbour to some considered, thoughtful souls, of which Nick Spencer is one. He is the real deal, in short. His wines are more than wines. They are their grapes laid bare
- Campbell Mattinson

Inspired by the classic ‘Burgundies’ of 1950s–70s Australia, Nick Spencer’s Light Dry Red is a fresh, modern take on those elegant, medium-bodied Shiraz-Pinot blends that once defined the Hunter Valley. This is bright, aromatic, and built for effortless drinking, but with enough depth to keep things interesting.

A 50/50 blend of Shiraz and Pinot Noir, each variety was picked and fermented separately - 100% destemmed and fermented on skins for 14 days, before spending 12 months in old puncheons and amphoras. The 2023 vintage is silky, pure, and bursting with red fruit freshness.

Aromatically, it’s blueberries, red cherries, and spice, with subtle notes of cassis and earth adding dimension. The palate is supple and juicy, with fine, powdery tannins and a clean, mouthwatering finish.

Complex yet carefree, serious yet smashable - this is modern Aussie red wine at its best.

"It’s a beauty, and perhaps more mid-weighted than light... It’s unencumbered, and the result is a delicious drink."

"Its varietal composition – pinot noir and shiraz – and its unashamedly svelte shape are a nod to the classic ‘Burgundies’ we made around the middle of the last century. Sometimes nostalgia is a noose, but here it’s a look back that takes us forward."

Gundagai is better known as a highway stop between major cities, enshrined in Australian folk song legend and home to the Dog On The Tuckerbox. Nick Spencer started sourcing fruit from this yet-to-be-household-name region over a decade ago and it’s a vital source of quality grapes. Here the LDR (Light Dry Red) is a 50/50 nod to an old Australian blend of Shiraz (Gundagai) and Pinot Noir (Tumbarumba and a little Gundagai fruit) seeing a renaissance. Deep garnet hue: serious nose of just opened dried cranberry packet, packed cherries in their juice, deep red English cabbage rose petal, ermine velvet, a little herby thyme, plum sauce, char and with vanilla pod licks and creamed coffee comfort. Elegance, etching, filagree, delicacy, style, class. Just medium weight but with such intensity of balanced flavour: neither variety dominates, but harmonises with the other.

This is an equal blend of shiraz and pinot noir with fruit sourced from Gundagai. It’s a beauty, and perhaps more mid-weighted than light, but it’s certainly not a dense or heavy wine. Lovely aromatics – all spicy, floral and savoury – with red cherries, plums, hints of raspberries and loganberries, too. The palate is coated with fine tannins, and lithe acidity leads this to a convincing finish. Oak is not a factor, so it’s unencumbered, and the result is a delicious drink.

This is exquisite. It’s a delicacy. It’s fine and floral and spicy and berried, its flavours built on acidity, its nuances intricate. This is the polar opposite of the smack-you-in-the-face red wine style. It’s just itself, light to medium in weight, of the garden, summer berries glancing over at autumn, some apple to the acidity, its charm somewhere between studied and neglected. It won’t be everyone’s cuppa I guess, you have to slow down and take a listen to it, but for me personally this wine brings joy into the room.

Here’s a wine harking back to Australia’s cardigan-clad past that just happens to be incredibly contemporary too. Learning some of the fruit is grown around Gundagai instantly puts an old folk tune in your head, but that’s just the beginning of the nostalgia trip. Its varietal composition – pinot noir and shiraz – and its unashamedly svelte shape are a nod to the classic ‘Burgundies’ we made around the middle of the last century. Sometimes nostalgia is a noose, but here it’s a look back that takes us forward.

    Great mid week quaffer

Has plenty of filling and interest for a 'LDR' and matches the mid week spag bog perfectly.

    Enjoyed this one immensely

Hadn’t tried this one before and was a very pleasant surprise. Smooth on the palate, great on its own as well as with food. Will buy again for sure.

Great flavour, excellent value light bodied red

Love this classic Pinot Noir/Shiraz blend which used to be called 'Burgundy' in the 1960's & 70's.

Nick Spencer Wines

Nick Spencer is one of NSW's most decorated winemakers. Over the span of more than two decades, he has become perhaps the state's most outspoken advocate for the potential of the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular, Tumbarumba and Gundagai.

Nick's wines exemplify balance, style, immense drinkability and exceptional value for money. As his label has expanded, his winemaking has become more adventurous, now incorporating the use of amphora, sulphur-free bottlings and a more stripped-back winemaking style to highlight the quality of the fruit that these lesser-known NSW regions can produce.

He is one of the most important producers in NSW today and is the touchstone of quality for the state.
