Description

The Mount Henry is Mount Pleasant's ode to the legendary Hunter Valley Shiraz and Pinot Noir blends of the 1950s and 1960s.

The fruit is lovingly handpicked and destemmed, then fermented and pressed separately - the Shiraz going to tank, the Pinot going to oak, and both left to sit in their respective vessels for six months before being blended together.

This is the perfect entry point into the sublime heritage range of red wines from this historic Hunter Valley estate.

Complex, classy and beautifully balanced is the name of the game, and it's a winner for sure.

"Boysenberry, biscuit spice, violet and dried rose perfume. Medium-bodied, purple fruit, some grain and grip to tannin, structure is good, acidity sits very well, and there’s quite a volume of fruit, and the length is excellent, and savoury too. Lovely wine, and I think it offers something different that lifts it above, hence the score."

94 points - "This has mojo. Sappy, savoury, a pleasing bitterness and tension of tannin and minerally acidity in tow. Some pencil shaving oak overlaid but that tart red fruit, Italianate tannin, herbal inflection and light, botanical elements all feel harmonious and compelling. Slinky texture then tugs to firm. Really good." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

94 points - "Can’t deny, it’s one of my fave blends, the Shiraz/Pinot, if one can generalise like this, and Mt Henry is sort of a benchmark for me. I’m trying hard not to be biased. But who can ever be in 100%? Black cherry scented, violet, blackberry leaf, granite and dark leather, some dead flower umami note and dark slate tannin, it’s an alpine amaro drink with a bitter-salty seaweed finish. Cool stony texture and quite smooth and evenly spread but focused drive. High drinkability! Tip top!" - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Oh my. This Hunter River Burgundy thing is absolutely brilliant when done well. First crafted by Maurice O'Shea in 1937, it has become trendy again, particularly over the last decade. A seductive blend of Shiraz and Pinot Noir, go here. This is ace.

Dripping with purple berries and dark cherries, it's sleek, measured and incredibly delicious. Roughly a 80/20 blend, its medium-bodied frame makes it so attractive as layers of interest peel back with ease. Red plums, char, smoked meats, earthiness with dried Mediterranean herbs scattered about with what appears some deliberate accuracy. Pretty scents of red and purple flowers diffuse gaining momentum with more time in the glass. The acid has a little crunch but is shaped precisely. And the length! Yes! Silky and dangerously approachable, this will age well but it's hard to resist its beauty. Dive in with confidence." - Q Wine Reviews

Australia’s unique blend crafted by Maurice O’Shea in 1937 has now become a cult hero among wine lovers. Sourced from our own vineyards, the shiraz is lightly framed and blended with pinot noir from our 100-year-old block, providing a wine of balance, complexity, and finesse. Mount Pleasant revived this blend in the late 1990s and it has since been emulated across all regions in Australia for its amazing complexity.

Tasting Notes

Floral notes combine with red fruits and blackberries and spice to provide a complex nose. An impeccably balanced palate with the fruit richness from the shiraz and powerful tannins from the Pinot.

Drinking Window

Mount Henry is designed to drink in its youth, however, recent examples have shown the ability to age for greater than 20 years.
