Description

The Mount Mary Triolet is a wine inspired by the great white blends of Bordeaux.

The vineyard is planted to 75% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon and 5% Muscadelle. Each variety is picked at perfect ripeness, then vinified in essentially the same way as their Chardonnay with 100% barrel ferment (in mostly older oak), some solids from firm pressing and lees stirring employed over the 11 months it rests in barrel before bottling.

It is a tightly wound, beautifully balanced example of this cult favourite wine, showing the restraint and finesse that is typical of the best Triolets. The ideal season in the Yarra allowing plenty of flavour development and pristine acidity through the wine.

This is a top example of why this is considered one of the country's finest examples of the Bordeaux Blanc style.

"An outstanding release, perhaps the best I’ve tasted in the last two decades... Truly exceptional and unique and arguably the finest interpretation of Bordeaux blanc in this region."

"a zesty citrus rind finish of excellent length. There’s pink grapefruit with a sweet green capsicum flavour to close. Very nice. Very specific. Yum, in short."

An outstanding release, perhaps the best I’ve tasted in the last two decades, showing concentrated flavor and a pithy character with tension, drive and a distinctive Pessac-like mineral core. Aromas of lemon confit, Asian pears, oats, beeswax, lanolin, flint, mandarin blossoms, grapefruit, biscuits, crushed stones and honeysuckle. The palate is fine and textural, with racy acidity wrapped around a weighted, seamlessly integrated mouthfeel, layered with minerals over a citric finish. Truly exceptional and unique and arguably the finest interpretation of Bordeaux blanc in this region. 65% sauvignon blanc, 23% semillon and 12 percent muscadelle. Drink or hold. It will age for decades. Screw cap.

The 2023 Triolet leads with exotic spices and white flowers, and the oak on the nose is evident but highly attractive. The palate leads with a concentrated attack of intense fruit and acidity, courtesy of the cooler vintage that was 2023. This is a wine that ages tremendously well, and one feels almost sad to open it at this time, given the layered complexity that develops over time. For what it's worth, this is a sensational release of the Triolet, one that is tighter and edgier on the acidity front that I can recall in recent times. This is a magnificent wine. The Triolet is composed of a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (65%), Semillon (25%) and the balance Muscadelle. The fruit is estate grown, crushed and mostly destemmed, with 20% whole bunches. The wine was fermented and matured for 11 months in seasoned barriques. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Pie apple, grapefruit, quince, a little passionfruit and lime, a bit floral, a touch of cedar and cinnamon. There’s some lively tang, but also a silky feel through the wine, all calm and composed, chamomile perfume, a grainy feel to texture, salted pistachio, with a zesty citrus rind finish of excellent length. There’s pink grapefruit with a sweet green capsicum flavour to close. Very nice. Very specific. Yum, in short.

65/25/10% sauvignon blanc/semillon/muscadelle. Crushed and destemmed with 20% whole bunches in the press. Barrel fermented and matured for 11 months in seasoned barriques. Brightly coloured. Intense aromas of confit lemon, quince, oyster shell and white flowers. Even at this early stage, there's a real sense of harmony on the chalky, saline, structured and very long palate. If you have never tasted this wine, you are missing out on what I have long regarded as one of the Yarra Valley's, and indeed Australia's, finest white wines.

    Best white blend in Aus?

    Very Bordeaux in style.

    Classy, long, fruity and delicious.

The Triolet blend, first produced at Mount Mary in 1987, was inspired by the white wines of Graves, Bordeaux. The vineyard is planted to 75% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon and 5% Muscadelle. Each variety is picked at optimum ripeness, and is fermented separately. The characteristics of optimum ripeness are different for each variety. We pick the Sauvignon blanc after the strong herbaceous flavours have disappeared, the Semillon when the acid is not too harsh, and the Muscadelle when the flavour intensity peaks. In the winery we use mostly older barrels for this wine, with the entire production being barrel fermented. Relatively hard pressing is employed to give the wine texture and lees stirring is carried out to add complexity and body. The Triolet is typically barrel aged for 11 months by which time the overt fruity flavours have diminished, and complex aromas are beginning to develop.

Mount Mary

One of the great Australian domains is in the form of its life with young Sam Middleton as head winemaker.

The list of accolades for the great Mount Mary is long and rich. They are one of the country's most celebrated and collectable family-owned estates. From the impossible balance of the iconic Quintet and Triolet blends to the scintillating Chardonnays and the rare and almost mythical Pinot Noir, there is not a hair out of place in the Mount Mary lineup.

With Sam Middleton in charge of the winemaking process, Mount Mary is entering its second golden age as one of the jewels of the Yarra Valley.
