Description

Moorooduc Estate has been running the Garden Vineyard - located just across the hill - for over ten years now. Owned by the McFall family, it allows the team to play with a different expression of Peninsula Pinot.

The 2023 vintage was a low-yielding one thanks to a tricky spring, but the mild summer allowed for a long, slow ripening that packed the fruit with flavour.

Richard McIntyre went for 100% whole bunch fermentation here, and you can tell. It gives the wine a distinct savoury edge. Instead of just sweet red fruit, you get layers of sour cherry, black pepper and an earthy, truffle-like character - think mushrooms and soy.

It spent 10 months in French oak, but only a small portion was new, so the structure comes more from those stems and the fruit itself. It’s firm, complex and definitely built for the dinner table - ideally with a roast leg of lamb.

There’s a bit of wow to this release. It has an urgency to it, and excellent fruit, and plenty going on, and genuine thrust through the finish. Bowled over, I was. Cherry-plum, positive reduction, purple flowers, twiggy spices and cedar. This is a ‘no need to waffle on’ wine. It’s fabulous.

The Garden Vineyard, across the hill from us, is owned by the McFall family and has been leased and run by Moorooduc Estate for over ten years. Fruit was hand picked and whole bunches placed directly into the fermenter. Deep ruby with an earthy nose of sautéed mushrooms, soy, caramelised onion and black pepper spice. On the palate, concentrated sour cherry fruit vies with the pepper spice and mushroom truffle perfume and savouriness. The tannins are firm and the acid is fresh, with meaty, spicy notes that go for days. Match to a rare roast leg of lamb with all the trimmings.

The 2023 Vintage

Another season that took us on a roller coaster ride of climatic conditions. The vines were still bruised coming off the back of a difficult ’21/’22 season. Early budburst in the warmer sites was greeted with spring sunshine and we felt optimistic about the potential of a better flowering period ahead. That wasn’t to be, as the weather turned cold, wet, and windy for weeks and the already battered canes of the previous year struggled to flower and set fruit, resulting in another year where yields were greatly reduced. After the difficult weather throughout fruit set, nature delivered a mild period of warm nights and cool to mild days over December and from veraison to harvest. While the yields were small, the cool, stable conditions over summer and in the lead up to harvest resulted in a long slow ripening period that gave us delicious wines of deep concentration, bright acidity, layered complexity and beautifully fine detail.
