Description

The 2023 MMAD Chenin Blanc showcases the potential of Blewitt Springs' old vines, the “babies” of the vineyard, planted back in 1964. Crafted by Adam Wadewitz, this is an impressively powerful and textural expression of Chenin Blanc.

Thanks to a cool, late growing season and smaller bunches, the wine is vibrant and aromatic with a refined yet intense profile. The fruit was meticulously handled—a blend of whole bunches pressed to French oak puncheons and crushed fruit fermented in concrete with skin contact. The result is a complex palate, with richness and density from mid-palate through to the finish.

It bursts with notes of pear, apple, and mace, laced with a mineral, saline edge that adds freshness. Chalky, smoky undertones carry through to the long, pithy finish, leaving a lingering savoury quality. A Chenin Blanc with concentration and structure, it's set to develop gracefully over the next 15 years.

"This 2023 throwing out lifted perfume of Calla lily, fresh linen and yellow grapefruit pith. There is hulled almonds and raw cashew cream, kefir acidity and a coconut water freshness. Wet stone, crystal melon and white rind cheese... A long extended flavour palate hits the nail on the head for the moreish, drinkable quality its gaining a reputation for."

"From vines pushing roots into Blewitt Springs sand for 60 years, it’s for those who like to chew on a wine’s texture. There’s pithy lemon scents, racy acid too, but the mid-palate complexity, a sense of finely woven linen, really is the key."

97 points - "Following the heights of the 2022 vintage the 2023 is leading the charge once again for a modern linear style of Chenin Blanc. This 2023 throwing out lifted perfume of Calla lily, fresh linen and yellow grapefruit pith. There is hulled almonds and raw cashew cream, kefir acidity and a coconut water freshness. Wet stone, crystal melon and white rind cheese. It has an exfoliating, almost gritty sensation that adds further dimension and texture. A long extended flavour palate hits the nail on the head for the moreish, drinkable quality its gaining a reputation for. Drink now with steamed clams and ginger sauce." - Shanteh Wale (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "The road to success with chenin blanc is not always clear. Take your eye off it and you can find yourself in drab backwaters, but unwavering focus delivers you to exciting destinations like this. 94 points - "Intensity of flavour is one of this wine’s key attributes but texture and length are the thing. Pear, apple, mace and hay characters get a good chatter of flavour going, (white) pepper notes sprayed over the finish. There’s a chalky, earthy, smoky aspect to the aftertaste and a general feeling of completeness. It’s a savoury white, turned out beautifully. Drink 2024 - 2030." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2023 Chenin Blanc is a tidy, textural wine, with gently loose-knit tannins through the middle palate and through the finish. This is all green apple and white flower, crushed quartz and warm, white beach sand. This is stylistically classical Chenin Blanc and quite beautiful for it. A lovely wine that puts forward a convincing case for choosing Chenin Blanc as your next textural dry white choice." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

93 points - "Light yellow colour with aromas of cashewnut, smoky barrel ferment, creamy yeast lees, fresh pastry, not especially chenin-like but attractive. In the mouth it's full bodied and rounded, with soft texture into a dry finish, with weight and presence. It's good now but would surely develop more character with a litte more time in bottle. There is richness and depth of flavour: I'd love to see it again in a couple of years." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Very good, but not Chenin as I know it

    This was tense.

Super concentration of green apple, talc, bath salts and a long finish. Reminded me of recent bottle Domain Fevre Petis Chablis 2021. I was looking for the baked apple, custardy tones that’s typical with Chenin but it wasn’t there. Initially this made for a challenging drink until I just stop trying to find Chenin and just enjoyed it for what it was. This will age wonderfully. Hold for 5 yrs before opening. It is tense, but unlike Chenin as I know it.

A late and cool growing season gave us smaller, more flavourful bunches and lifted aromatics. There is a richness and density of fruit on the mid-palate that reflects another year of our farming the vineyard, and lower yields. We are starting to uncover the full potential of these old vines. A mix of crushed and whole bunch pressed fruit was fermented in both concrete and large format old oak bring texture to the wine. The textured palate is balanced with a mineral, saline edge and long, pithy finish.

The 2023 Chenin Blanc has the concentration and structure to develop fine tertiary characters in the bottle over the next 15 years.

MMAD

As if Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW of Shaw + Smith and Tolpuddle weren't busy enough already. Their newest venture has seen them team up with their chief winemaker Adam Wadewitz and wine industry professional David LeMire MW to create MMAD Vineyard, based in McLaren Vale.

MMAD Vineyard represents a union of expertise and passion in the wine industry. This partnership, rooted in the success of Shaw + Smith winery in the Adelaide Hills, expands to include other projects like Tolpuddle Vineyard in Tasmania.

Located in Blewitt Springs, the vineyard boasts fine Maslin sands and elevated terrain, granting its wines a distinctive aromatic character. Beneath the sand lies a layer of precious ironstone, contributing structure and complexity to the wines. The vineyard's old Grenache, Shiraz, and Chenin Blanc vines, some dating back to 1939, are a testament to its rich viticultural history.

MMAD is one of the 'must-watch' projects in McLaren Vale. With the combination of an exceptional site and the depth of talent behind it, it's sure to produce some of the region's most exciting wines over the coming years.
