The sub-region perhaps most synonymous with Mac Forbes, the Woori Pinot is gorgeous this year - supple, red fruited and beguilingly floral.

Description

Woori Yallock might be the pick of the wines in both the Single Vineyard and the Villages range - they have a wonderful density and power to go alongside Mac's graceful, ethereal touch.

A mix of red volcanic and grey loam soils contribute to the wine’s layered and nuanced profile. The undulating terrain shields the vines from drying winds in Woori, while higher rainfall imparts a dense, yet effortless structure to the wine, which flows seamlessly across the palate.

This Pinot Noir is highly aromatic, with vibrant notes of maraschino cherry, fresh mulch, and a hint of orange oil that leap from the glass. On the palate, the wine delivers a captivating interplay of sweet and savoury elements, with sappy amaro and rich red cherry compote packed tightly within a framework of sinewy tannins. The distinct influence of the two soil profiles is evident, adding depth and complexity to the wine’s character.

Such a great palate, silky and sinewy, while the pretty red fruit aromatics are incredibly lifted. A high-toned Pinot to match any in the Yarra.

"Perfumed and floral with aromas of red cherries, cranberries, rose petal and a little hedgerow. Light to medium bodied, and with good weight through the middle, this is built around a core of bright acidity and fine, supple tannins. Will be even better six to12 months, and beyond, from now."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "There’s a bit more grunt to this release, a meatiness at its core. It’s a very good pinot noir; it’s distinctive. Stalks, herbs, black and red cherries, aforementioned smoked meat and a subtle tomato leaf element. It presents as bright and fresh but with a driving bass line. I’m on board here. It finishes sinewy and long, and will develop very well." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

    Forgettable

    Very pale and tasteless.

Location:
Nestled behind the Waramate hills, this area features a mix of red volcanic and grey loam soils, making it slightly more complex to define the identity of this subregion. The undulating hills provide protection from the drier winds, while higher rainfall contributes to a perfume, weight, and structure that appear dense and effortless, flowing seamlessly to the back palate.

Tasting Notes:
Highly aromatic with notes of maraschino cherry, fresh mulch, and orange oil leaping from the glass. The sweet and savory interplay continues on the palate, with sappy amaro and rich red cherry compote packed into a tightly coiled framework of endless sinewy tannins. The influence of the two soil profiles is prominently displayed in this wine. We recommend decanting this wine before serving at 14-16°C.

Vintage:
The season was challenging, marked by extreme rainfall during winter and spring. Poor flowering conditions resulted in reduced yields, but the depth and concentration of flavor are enhanced as a result. A long, slow ripening period over the summer led to a late harvest, producing fruit with wonderful detail and depth—a revelation from such a difficult season.

Mac Forbes

If you love premium and artisanal Australian wine, Mac Forbes is a name you need to know. He’s not only one of the country’s most talented winemakers, but he’s one of the most influential spokesmen for promoting the concept of Australian ‘terroir’, believing that wine should represent a time and a place.

Mac specialises in single vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet from the Yarra Valley. His wines are delicate and finely etched, characterised by subtlety and grace.

His Pinot Noirs are fine-boned, the Chardonnays are adored by lovers of fruit purity rather than winemaking artifice, and his array of off-dry Rieslings from the Strathbogie Ranges are among the country's most interesting. Additionally, his ever-expanding range of experimental wines is a treasure trove for the curious drinker.
