Description

Here Damon Koerner puts an interesting spin on an already interesting variety. This is a Vermentino with some attitude.

He use a canny combination of skin contact and ageing in old oak to bring extra layers of complexity to a variety often thought of as mono-dimensional.

This is smashability writ large and arguably the finest example of Vermentino in the country.

"For such a light weight (10.5% alcohol) and modest skin contact, there’s so much flavour and texture here... A thirst-slaking nature, a true palate resetter, but wonderfully evocative of the variety, in its own unique and complex style. Bravo."

94 points - "For such a light weight (10.5% alcohol) and modest skin contact, there’s so much flavour and texture here. It still sits at medium weight, or just shy, but ripples with the authority of powdery tannins, chewiness to texture, a burr of saline minerality and talc-like pucker to finish. Lemon myrtle, lemon-ginger tea, hazy green apple juice and faint white pepper, celery and tonic water characters combine here. A thirst-slaking nature, a true palate resetter, but wonderfully evocative of the variety, in its own unique and complex style. Bravo." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

    Thirst-slaking, textural and tangy cracker

I love this wine. It transformed my view of Vermintino and its potential in the right hands, like the Koerner Bros. Scented nose, brushed citrus skin, lemon drop. Textured and tangy palate, equal parts saline, beeswax and nectarine/sour lemon, with the right shot of acid on the finish. If you like Luis Seabra (DD importer of the year recently), you’ll love this. A G’n’T drinker’s white.

    Savoury and smashable

Has real heft, and is as voluptuous as any vermentino I’ve had. Deliciously creamy and herbaceous textural composition, which is cut by a crazy-refreshing, laser edge acidity. Savoury all day. Equal parts classy and interesting, and one of those wines that you shortpour your guests on so you can have more.

Koerner

Growing up in Clare Valley, Damon Koerner developed a deep connection with the region's rich wine history. In 2014, he and his brother Jono launched Koerner Wines to bring fresh energy to their home turf, creating vibrant, modern wines that feel both distinctly Clare and cutting-edge.

Koerner Wines is all about blending tradition with innovation. Damon’s organically-minded approach and contemporary techniques – like fermenting and ageing in clay amphora – result in wines that are bright, food-friendly, and ideally suited to Australia’s climate.

Using his family’s Gullyview vineyard alongside nearby plots, Damon works with Clare Valley classics like Riesling and Cabernet, while also embracing more unique varieties like Carignan, Sciacarello, and top-notch Vermentino. His wines showcase Clare Valley’s diversity, revealing unexpected sides of this iconic region. With a recent expansion into the Adelaide Hills, the range continues to grow and mature.

As one of Australia’s most celebrated young winemakers, Damon Koerner is redefining what Clare Valley & Adelaide Hills wines can be. If you haven’t tried Koerner Wines yet, it’s high time to explore these excellent South Australian vinos.
