Description

Koerner’s 2023 Adelaide Hills Savagnin is for the adventurous drinker who loves a wine that’s both seaside-crisp and deeply intriguing.

Damon leans into the variety’s natural acidity, picking early to keep things zesty, with notes of white peach, apricot, and a briny, coastal edge that feels like a refreshing ocean breeze.

Hand-harvested and whole bunch pressed, this Savagnin gets the Koerner treatment with a mix of barrique and stainless steel ageing, retaining purity while letting the stone-fruit aromas come alive.

It's Savagnin at its raw, natural best—an honest expression of Adelaide Hills terroir bottled at a zesty 13.1% alcohol. Pair it with oysters, seafood, or light vegetarian dishes and let its clean, mineral finish take centre stage.

"The premier release of this wine. The nose is mineral-driven, with notes of grapefruit, orange blossoms, chalk, lemon peel and flint. The palate is textural, cut through with a laser-like acidity, showing notes of mandarins, lime curd and oyster shells. Wonderfully balanced with such high tension, energy and purity. Excellent. Drink or hold."

91 points - "It holds good texture, nearly medium weight, somewhat neutral overall. A mix of things quietly going on. A clatter of limey acidity on green apple, fresh and dried. A touch of green pear. Some slate-like mineral characters. A sizzle of very bitter tonic water a pleasing reset of the palate as it corkscrews through the finish. It’s got a decent bit of pulpiness and interest, though it feels pretty neutral and safe for the variety despite the drinkability and refreshment factor on hand. Worth a look." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Koerner

Growing up in Clare Valley, Damon Koerner developed a deep connection with the region's rich wine history. In 2014, he and his brother Jono launched Koerner Wines to bring fresh energy to their home turf, creating vibrant, modern wines that feel both distinctly Clare and cutting-edge.

Koerner Wines is all about blending tradition with innovation. Damon’s organically-minded approach and contemporary techniques – like fermenting and ageing in clay amphora – result in wines that are bright, food-friendly, and ideally suited to Australia’s climate.

Using his family’s Gullyview vineyard alongside nearby plots, Damon works with Clare Valley classics like Riesling and Cabernet, while also embracing more unique varieties like Carignan, Sciacarello, and top-notch Vermentino. His wines showcase Clare Valley’s diversity, revealing unexpected sides of this iconic region. With a recent expansion into the Adelaide Hills, the range continues to grow and mature.

As one of Australia’s most celebrated young winemakers, Damon Koerner is redefining what Clare Valley & Adelaide Hills wines can be. If you haven’t tried Koerner Wines yet, it’s high time to explore these excellent South Australian vinos.
