Description

From a single vineyard in the Pyrenees, this is Joshua Cooper’s take on Sauvignon Blanc – and it’s about as far as you can get from the shouty, tropical style. The site sits on gravelly clay loams over quartz and mudstone, giving low yields and naturally concentrated fruit.

In 2023, the grapes were picked by hand and whole-bunch pressed, with the juice going straight into old French oak for a long, slow wild ferment. It stayed on lees right up until bottling, building texture and rounding out the edges without losing freshness.

The result is a quietly complex white with citrus, herbal and savoury notes wrapped up in a supple, almost creamy feel. There’s still plenty of zip, but the oak and lees work give it depth and shape. It’s more about subtlety and texture than fruit fireworks – a style that will develop nicely over the next few years.

95 points
"Barrel fermented and aged on lees for a year – explains why this has wonderful texture and definition. Plenty of excellent flavour within: lemon and limes, nettles and fresh basil, honeycomb and nougat plus ginger cream; it’s a little smoky and savoury. The refreshing acidity tempers everything and creates a lingering finish. This is very good. And delicious."

94 points - "From the Pyren Vineyard which is, funnily enough, in Pyrenees. The idea here is to make a medium bodied white wine and produced very much like Josh Cooper’s chardonnay wines. Also, a slightly later pick to get some flavour packed into the wine. A nod in the direction of Francois Cotat, explains Josh.

Fragrant with a mesh of stone fruits, preserved lemon, ginger, almond savouriness and some fir tree and fern elements in tow. The palate similarly set, squeaky in texture with good concentration of flavour, tart stone fruit, ginger, almost a pine needle piquancy to taste and licks of cinnamon/clove and almond again. Tightly wound, elegant, refined and destined for good cellaring. Spot on." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2023 Pyren Vineyard Warrenmang Sauvignon Blanc leads with cassis and juniper, a hit of quinine, green apple, white pepper and pineapple. In the mouth, the wine has loads of dried herbs, waxy phenolics and a drift of gentle texture through the finish. Engaging wine here, as per usual, from Joshua Cooper. 13.5% alcohol, sealed diner Diam and wax." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

    Gorgeous Wine

It would be hard to pick a flaw in this wine even if you are not a fan of SB. So much mouth feel and fantastic length on an already complex palate. A wow wine.

Pale straw. Intense and concentrated aromatics of nettle, struck flint, preserved lemon, and grapefruit pith are complexed by subtle peach and nectarine fruit, clotted cream and spice. The palate is again led by citrus/stonefruit, flint, spice and savoury mirerality. Fleshy, textured and long with fine acid - this wine shares many similarities with the style and weight of the chardonnay’s we produce, and cannot be recommended highly enough for lovers of those wines.

The balance, structure and concentration ensure a long life ahead.

Joshua Cooper

Joshua Cooper is the son of Nelly and Allan Cooper, the founders of the acclaimed Cobaw Ridge winery in the Macedon Ranges.

Born and raised on the top-tier cool climate wines of his family, Josh's wines have a delicacy and unforced feel to them. As you might imagine, growing up in the Macedon Ranges, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are two varieties he particularly excels with, as too is his great love, which is Cabernet. He sources his fruit from a series of growers across central Victoria who farm with a like-minded philosophy of organic farming and sustainability, with plans to plant his own vineyard in Macedon in the future.

Josh makes only a small amount of each wine and they are in high demand from those who want to get in early on the next generation of Cooper. He is undoubtedly one of the country's most exciting and acclaimed young winemakers, being named James Halliday's Best New Winery for 2024 as well as the winner of Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine’s Young Winemaker of the Year 2020.
