Description

Jane Eyre’s winemaking journey may have taken her deep into Burgundy’s hallowed vineyards, but there’s still something special about seeing her name on a bottle of Mornington Pinot.

This 2023 release comes from a single vineyard in Shoreham Park, planted in the late 1990s. It’s a beautifully poised Pinot, fermented with 20% whole bunches and aged in French oak (10% new) for 10 months. In classic Jane fashion, there’s no over-extraction or heavy oak - just a quiet confidence and clarity that lets the fruit and place shine.

Aromatically, it’s vivid and wild: redcurrants, rhubarb and sour cherry meet herbal spice, rose petals, and just a flicker of Campari-esque bitterness. The palate is fine and detailed, sitting right in that sweet spot between prettiness and power. Tannins are soft and grippy, giving form to the wine’s juicy core and framing it all with purpose.

Compared to the Yarra release, this is slightly more generous and full-fruited, though it carries the same finely drawn line and calm intensity that has become Jane’s signature. It’s an excellent expression of modern Mornington Pinot - lively, pure, and quietly complex.

"The whole bunch adds a crackling component here, an autumnal rustle, which is suffused with fruit as the wine is buoyed with air, redcurrant and wild red cherry unfurling. Carraway, rhubarb, clove and a dried orange peel/Campari note add complexity. There’s lovely poise and clarity here, while tannins are pleasingly meaningful. It’s a very nice release."

Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre has a crazy story. A Melbourne hairdresser who decided, in her own words, she didn’t want to own a salon and wasn’t quite great at hair, so why not make wine? Fast forward to now, and she’s one of the most respected names working in Burgundy. First Aussie ever named Négociant of the Year by La Revue du Vin de France. First woman, too. No big deal.

What we love about Jane is how grounded her winemaking is. There’s no flash, no ego - just clean, focused wines that absolutely hum with energy. She works as a micro-négociant, buying fruit from tiny parcels, building long-term relationships with growers, and often farming the same rows every vintage.

Her style leans toward the elegant and expressive: light touch, gentle extractions, minimal new oak. She talks about whole bunch as a seasoning tool. These are wines that feel good - fine tannins, bright fruit, beautiful transparency. They drink effortlessly but reward attention.

While Burgundy is home, Jane still makes time for Australia, crafting superb Pinot from the Yarra and Mornington. Her wines across both hemispheres share a through-line: clarity, balance, and a kind of quiet confidence that you don’t forget.
