Description

The Irrewarra Pinot Noir from Nick Farr is yet another example of his winemaking prowess, with fruit-driven power and incredible structure.

The fruit comes from a dry-grown (ie. unirrigated) plot planted in 2001 by the Calvert family, which can now be considered mature. The climate is quite different to the other vineyards used in the By Farr range, with lots of rainfall and free-draining soils. The grapes live alongside the cows but it looks like they don't realise how yummy they are (particularly after fermentation).

Red cherries, fresh, sweet and sour, are joined by some cinnamon spice, musk and earth in this cracking wine, which is silky, bright and very easy to polish off in one sitting.

96 points - "Good depth of purple tinged colour, the bouquet super expressive and loaded with dried-herb, dried seaweed, iron/ferrous savouriness, dried cherry as well, but the bouquet is very savoury and the opposite of a fruit bomb. On the palate it's very intense and powerful, with a gorgeous core of sweet cherry fruit, liberal fine grained tannins providing the structure and the length also remarkable. Lots of whole-bunch evident here: it's very much a Farr style of pinot and from memory the best Irrewarra I've seen to date." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

    Even Better

Couldn’t pass on reviewing the 2023 vintage. Even better than 2022. Totally worth the slightly higher than average Pinot price. Such an abundantly lovely wine.

    So popular. Too popular

Elegance in a bottle. New favourite of everyone I’ve shared it with. Everything about this wine is delightful.

    Pinotlicious

Perfect balance, length and quintessential pinot from a family that embodies great winemakers

Spice grip and char then softness, then more tart bright sinewy notes. The nose is petals and perfume, then darker, richer barrel notes. It has a really lovely aroma. Actually, calling it lovely diminishes it somewhat, this is unique, complex and entirely appealing for those looking for something more from a glass of Pinot Noir. There is a different oak profile maybe, something smokier, something more angular. It really works with this wine, even if I’m wrong about the new oak regime. Whatever it is, be it new or just more present, adds a layer to this wine. The Irrewarra only improves with each vintage, it seems, and this is no different. I sat with this for a little while and those spice notes just kept delivering, and each sip or sniff offered something new and delicious.

By Farr

Gary Farr is one of the most iconic winemakers in Victoria, or indeed, the country. He was responsible for taking Bannockburn in Geelong to the startling heights it reached as one of the benchmark producers of Burgundian varieties in the country. His own label, By Farr, is quite simply one of Australia's finest producers.

The Farr vineyards are based in the Moorabool Valley in Geelong, with a wide array of ancient soils resulting in small yields of incredibly intensely flavoured Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz and Viognier. With Gary's son Nick now making the wines, as well as taking his own Farr Rising label to monumental heights, this is a project set to dominate Geelong wine for years to come.

If you want to see one of the country's great winemaking families at work, anything by the Farrs will be one of the best examples of its kind in the country. Sheer class, guaranteed.
