Description

The Old Vine Grenache is one of Alex's specialities and arguably one of the first and most important Grenache wines of the modern era to inspire the flood of more refined Grenache we see emerging across Australia today.

The fruit from this 166-year-old vineyard gets full opportunity to show its true character. An extraordinary wine for its price. It shows a rare restraint in the use of oak. It's all about the dark rich fruit, and with fruit this beautiful, by Jove, it should be! Lots of baked earth and spice flavours too.

An excellent contemporary example of Australia's world-class Grenache capabilities.

96 points
"Stunning stuff and fabulous value. 200 dozen. A crimson/magenta hue, the nose is a mix of strawberries, florals, raspberries, milk chocolate and coffee grinds. The wine offers impressive intensity and is wonderfully seductive with silky tannins and great length. This is a brilliant Grenache and can be enjoyed for at least a decade, likely longer."
- Ken Gargett, The Vintage Journal

96 points - "Vine age here is over 70 years, with the Riebke vineyard at Ebenezer planted back in 1950. There is also 3% (a dollop) of Mataro from Nuriootpa, not quite as old, planted in 1965. The oak used here is a mix of large French and Austrian. Stunning stuff and fabulous value. 200 dozen. A crimson/magenta hue, the nose is a mix of strawberries, florals, raspberries, milk chocolate and coffee grinds. The wine offers impressive intensity and is wonderfully seductive with silky tannins and great length. This is a brilliant Grenache and can be enjoyed for at least a decade, likely longer. Drink now–2034." - Ken Gargett, The Vintage Journal

    Yummy yummy yummy

    So yummy

Luckily, we have access to very small parcels of fruit from old, dry-grown, hand-pruned/picked vineyards of up to 166 years of age. We decided early on that making a Grenache the way Barossan families made table wines many generations ago would honour the years of back-breaking work that went into keeping the vineyards feasible and sustainable. Whole-bunch ferments, no crushing or temperature control, natural yeasts, hand-plunged and foot-trodden.

Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country.

With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out. These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.
