Description

Hahndorf Hill have been flying the Grüner flag in Australia for over a decade now, and this Reserve bottling is the most serious expression in their line-up. Handpicked from the ripest parcels, wild-fermented in big old oak, left on lees for close to a year, then tucked away for another before release - it’s made with the same care you’d expect from top-tier Chardonnay.

There’s plenty of depth and texture here, but it never feels heavy. Think ripe stone fruit, citrus peel and a touch of spice, all wrapped up in a savoury, chalky framework. A little bit of malolactic fermentation adds some gentle roundness, but the wine’s backbone is all clean acid and slatey drive. It recently knocked off some big-name Europeans to be crowned top Grüner at the 2025 Frankfurt Trophy - no small feat.

Built to impress now with roast pork or scallops, but it’ll age beautifully too if you’re patient.

Brilliant Gruner, arguably best in OZ

Clearly the Reserve is head and shoulders above all Gruners in OZ.

The flavour just lingers and lingers. Definitely worth waiting for the Reserve!

Tasting notes: This Reserve Gruner Veltliner excelled at the prestigious Frankfurt International Trophy 2025, where not only was it judged to be the Best Wine from Australia, but was also rated as the top Gruner Veltliner in the entire competition, which included other esteemed examples from Austria and Germany. Made from selected, hand-harvested riper grapes, this wine is 100% wild-fermented in neutral large foudres and old, neutral French barriques. Approximately 18% of the wine is encouraged to go through malo-lactic fermentation, and it is matured on the lees, in the barrels, for 11 months prior to bottling. After bottling, the wine is aged for a further eleven months in our cool underground cellar. It is not surprising that this traditional Reserve-style of Gruner Veltliner can readily emulate the delicious richness and complexity of top Burgundian white wines. This wine is full on the nose with peach, nectarine skin, crushed tarragon and gentle spice. The palate is voluptuous with yellow stone fruits, citrus peel and a hint of toasted almonds - yet it retains a linear vibrancy from the juicy acidity and splash of spice. The tail is long and sexy with a gentle textural rub. Serve with roast chicken, duck and grilled pork, or your favourite seafood including shellfish (lobster, crab, scallops) - and excellent with all South East Asian cuisine.
