Description

The Nereus has quietly become one of the most fascinating reds in the Grosset line-up. Planted and grown side by side at the Rockwood Vineyard, Shiraz and Nero d’Avola are picked and fermented together – an unusual decision that has paid off in spades.

The 2023 is the most expressive release yet. Riotously perfumed, it spills out wild florals, dark berries and a flicker of spice. There’s more generosity than in past vintages, more of that Nero influence in the mid-palate – juicy, slightly rustic, and full of charm – while the Shiraz provides shape, depth and drive. It’s mid-weight, vibrant, and a little grippy in the best possible way.

As with everything Grosset, the detail is impeccable: estate-grown at Rockwood (certified organic and biodynamic), the blend is 88% Shiraz and 12% Nero d’Avola, matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (45% new).

The result is a red that feels distinctly Clare Valley yet refreshingly different. It’s ready to go now in all its youthful, aromatic glory, but has the structure to settle in the cellar if you can resist. A brilliant evolution of one of Grosset’s more unconventional ideas.

This small harvest has yielded a wonderfully drinkable blend of shiraz and nero d'avola that sets a beautiful contrast between the juicy black fruit depth of the Clare and the bright acidity, restrained alcohol, spicy, peppery complexity and mineral tannins of the cool 2023 harvest. The result is admirable and delicious! Drink 2025-2033

Spicy, dark-fruited notes of plums, blood oranges and blackberries with coffee beans and cinnamon bark. The medium-bodied palate has finely tuned tannins and bright acidity, leading into a silky, smooth and luscious finish. Made from biodynamically grown shiraz and nero d'avola. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Nereus is a blend of Shiraz and Nero d'Avola, and it presents us with a silky, spicy, slippery drinking experience. The tannins are shapely and fine and give some contrast to the streamlined fruit that veritably slips by on the palate. It's a lovely wine, built for pleasure not longevity (or maybe it was, but I believe it's best tasted while fresh). This is gorgeous.

Of all recent releases, this is the big improver: riotously perfumed, wilder than before, more generous than previously, more apparently nero (yet the blend remains shiraz/ nero), and slightly more gripping in the mid-palate. The decision to plant these two varieties in the same vineyard and combine them has resulted in a pleasingly satisfying mid-weight red, ready to be drunk while youthful and vibrant.
