Description

Lionheart is Barossa Shiraz with its boots off - hearty, generous, and not trying to be anything fancy. Sourced from old vines that have been hanging on for over a century, this is a wine that’s all about flavour and drinkability.

The 2023 vintage is packed with dark plum, blackberry, and a little hint of spice, wrapped in soft tannins and a touch of oak that adds just enough polish without taking away its easygoing charm. It’s made the old-school way - hand-picked, wild-fermented, basket-pressed - but the end result is straightforward and delicious, not overworked or showy.

This is the kind of Shiraz you crack open midweek or bring to a barbecue, knowing it’ll keep everyone happy. Sure, it’ll age for a few years, but honestly, it’s made to be enjoyed now, with zero overthinking.

92 points - "The Lionheart is an homage to the Barossa‘s lifelong champion of old vines, Carl Lindner. Deep magenta/purple with satsuma plum, black cherry and blueberry fruits with hints of fruitcake, pressed flowers, cocoa nibs, dark chocolate, espresso, earth and licorice. Plushly fruited on the palate with fine, silty tannins and bright acidity." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

91 points - "Aromas of plum, dark cherry, choc-mint, bramble, sweet spice and earth. Dark fruited, opulent, juicy and concentrated on the palate. There's a core of fleshy blood plum, spice and creamy oak at play. The tannins are firm and structured and the acidity delivers ping." - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

The Lionheart of Dandelion Vineyards is our old vine Barossa vineyard. These ancient, gnarled vines, many over a hundred years of age, are not only surviving but thriving on their own roots in some of the oldest soils on the planet.

In the fourth week of March whole bunches of Shiraz were hand harvested, then gently crushed and naturally fermented in open fermenters for eight days, hand plunged twice a day, before careful basket pressing into some new but predominantly older French Oak Barriques to finish fermentation. After 18 months maturation and a racking in the same oak, we bottled our Lionheart without filtration or fining, to capture the essence of the vineyard. Dandelion Vineyards Lionheart is ready to drink and will reward cellaring and decanting.
