Description

Dalrymple has been doing its thing in Tasmania’s Pipers River since 1987 - back when cool-climate Pinot was still a bit of a gamble. But founders Bertel and Anne Sundstrup saw the potential, planting vines on windswept slopes overlooking Bass Strait. These days, winemaker Peter Caldwell keeps the focus tight: sustainable, minimal-intervention wines that let the site do the talking.

The 2024 Dalrymple Pinot Noir is classic Tassie. It kicks off with bright cranberry, dark plum, and a little toasted spice. The palate is all about balance - dark fruit, savoury herbs, and that signature Tasmanian acidity holding it all together. A few whole bunches in the ferment add a bit of grip and edge, and nine months in French oak brings just enough polish without smoothing out the character.

It’s a Pinot that feels both fresh and grounded. Great drinking now but will only get better if you can stash it away for a bit. A proper taste of cool-climate Tasmania.

Tasting Note

Initial aromas of fresh cranberries, toasted spice and ripe tamarillo. These aromas are enhanced with earthy notes and dark plum after some time in the glass. The palate has attractive dark fruit with classic Tasmanian acidity, this is accompanied by complex herbal notes and a lingering finish with a touch of oak spice.

Best Enjoyed With

Baked gnocchi with wild mushrooms and pesto parmesan bechamel. Roast pork with pistachio stuffing served with braised leeks and creamy butternut mash.

Treatment

Fermentation started after two to three days and continued for four to five days, with five to twenty percent whole bunches, depending on site. The cap was plunged up to three times a day to extract colour and tannin from the skins. The wine was then pressed and settled before being placed into French oak barriques (20% new) for 9 months, where malolactic fermentation took place prior to filtration and bottling.
