Description

This is Clarendon Hills’ gateway to old-vine Grenache - sourced from dry-grown vines in Blewitt Springs and handled with the same care Roman Bratasiuk brings to all his single-vineyard work.

The fruit was hand-picked, destemmed, and fermented with a portion of whole berries using wild yeasts, before heading into seasoned French oak for 18 months. No fining, no filtration, just clean, expressive Grenache from one of McLaren Vale’s most prized subregions.

2023 was the third La Niña vintage in a row, and easily the best of the trio. A long, mild growing season pushed harvest deep into autumn, and the result was superbly balanced fruit - floral, lifted, and naturally fresh.

The wine is medium-weight with red berries, spice, and fine, sandy tannins. It’s fragrant and bright, but not soft - there’s structure here too. A smart introduction to the Clarendon Hills style, and a reminder of just how good Blewitt Springs Grenache can be.

“Perfumed aromas of blackberries, mulberry bush, dark chocolate and violets... Great value. Drink or hold.”

“The entry level, if you will, made from declassified fruit/wine from the three proprietary Blewitt Springs sites. The trajectory here is for brighter styles, though the graph curve is gradual. The house style remains, and there is no harm in that, given its history... It’s a fine introduction to the Clarendon Hills oeuvre, and at a more than fair tariff.”

“This is a powerful, inky rendition of this wine—and one not to be taken lightly. This is a whole lot of wine for the money."

93 points - “Perfumed aromas of blackberries, mulberry bush, dark chocolate and violets. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity, showing pomegranate, raspberry puree and fresh herbs. Great value. Drink or hold.” - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

The trajectory here is for brighter styles, though the graph curve is gradual. The house style remains, and there is no harm in that, given its history. Expect a deeply red-fruited, slightly meaty style, moody with sultry florals, black cherry, dried herbs and warmed whole brown spices. It’s a fine introduction to the Clarendon Hills oeuvre, and at a more than fair tariff.” - Marcus Ellis (Wine Companion)

93 points - “The 2023 Domaine Clarendon Grenache leads with a bouquet that is stubbornly resisting any alignment with the palate. There are two stories in this glass: one—the first—is told by the aromas: black, tarry, intense peat, licorice, blackstrap, biltong and crushed rocks, even a hint of crushed ant. The second story is told by the fruit in the mouth: succulent, vividly red and purple, compote in composure, saturating and palate staining. One assumes that for these two aspects of the wine to come together, you must decant it. Already it is starting to coalesce, but it has been 20 minutes in the glass. This is a powerful, inky rendition of this wine—and one not to be taken lightly. This is a whole lot of wine for the money. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam.” - Erin Larkin (Wine Advocate)

Clarendon Hills

Founded by Roman Bratasiuk in 1990, Clarendon Hills helped redefine Australian Shiraz. From the start, Bratasiuk focused on old-vine, single-vineyard reds from the elevated northern edge of McLaren Vale - bottled by site, clone, and variety, without shortcuts.

The cult flagship is Astralis, sourced from 1920s bush vines in Blewitt Springs. Powerful, structured and built to age, it set a new standard for South Australian Shiraz. But across the full range - Brookman, Sandown, Liandra and more - Clarendon Hills maps the complexity of McLaren Vale’s terroir with precision.

These are bold, cellar-worthy reds shaped with care: confident oak, fine tannins, and a focus on site above all. Clarendon Hills remains one of the country’s most important single-vineyard producers.
