Description

Jonathon Mattick is part of a new generation pushing Orange into the national conversation for fine wine. Since taking the reins at Canobolas, one of the region’s oldest vineyards, he’s been proving that Chardonnay grown on these volcanic slopes can stand shoulder to shoulder with Australia’s best. Farming organically and with a detail-driven, hands-off approach, Mattick is crafting wines of purity and precision that capture the unique power and altitude of Mount Canobolas.

The 2023 season delivered patience and reward: a cool, late start followed by six golden weeks of ripening in March and April. The result is a Chardonnay of remarkable finesse and drive, carrying the clarity and precision that has put Canobolas on the map as one of NSW’s most exciting Chardonnay producers.

Handpicked fruit was whole-bunch pressed and fermented naturally in French oak of varying ages, before a long rest on lees. The finished wine is a study in balance - ripe nectarine and lemon curd meet a line of saline minerality and fine, chalky structure. There’s a flicker of struck match complexity, but it’s the purity of fruit and seamless length that define it.

Already recognised with a string of top accolades - including 97 points in the Halliday Wine Companion - this is another benchmark release from Canobolas, one that confirms the mountain’s rising status as premium  Chardonnay country.

"A wine that might be passed by but, for those that revere wines of earthly spirit and finesse, this is utterly glorious."

The Wine Front 94 Points

Second release of wines for Jonathon Mattick under his new-old Canobolas Wine label, aka Canobolas-Mattick… I re-tasted the 2022s next to 2023s and they all show very well, particularly the 2023s, I’d say.

There’s satisfying ripeness in this Chardonnay, but it remains cool in flow with evenly spread flavour. Scents of yellow fruit spectrum, custard or lemon curd, star fruit, almond meal texture, a whiff of waxed wood and cinnamon bark to finish along with a persistent line of soft acidity. Great balance and elegance in this pretty lil’ thing.

Sourced from deep red ferrosol soils. Some wines require time and the peace and serenity of place to hear their voice. This is such a wine. It is not shouting for attention, instead, it's telling an age-old story of the trickling river streams, deep iron oxide soils and the under-vine make-up of a special place. Fresh linen, lotus flower and grapefruit pulp. An earthy celeriac and artichoke pull towards the crystalline salinity of quartz and scallop shell. Full mlf has tamed its natural quivering acidity and allowed for a horchata creaminess. A wine that might be passed by but, for those that revere wines of earthly spirit and finesse, this is utterly glorious.

2023 Chardonnay from Orange

Medium-light straw with a glint of green, the bouquet expressive and intense with butterscotch, malt, lemon and nectarine aromas, bright and fresh and youthful. The palate is super-refined and intense, bright and focused with tremendous length, focus and precision. An immaculate chardonnay with loads of potential.

    An Excellent Drop

A lovely wine, perfectly balanced and capable of complementing just about any meal

Lifted white jasmine and fressia aromas are layered over limeskin, star fruit and oyster shells. The palate is very well balanced, surfeit with tension thanks to the acidity, and a precise and mineral drive towards the finish. The wine expands effortlessly with layers of white nectarine, lemon balm and a saline chalkiness throughout. An endlessly pretty wine with a beautifully textural body. Exhibiting considerable concentration and concluding with a long, electric finish.
