Description

When it comes to Nero d’Avola in Australia, Brash Higgins is the benchmark. Brad Hickey was the first to graft Nero in McLaren Vale back in 2009, and this 13th vintage proves just how well this Sicilian native has adapted to its adopted home.

The 2023 growing season was a wettish one, producing low yields and fresh acidity. The fruit was hand-picked in early March, after a warm and breezy February helped ease the ripening process. As always, the NDV is crafted with a deep respect for tradition - wild fermented and aged on skins for six months in locally made, beeswax-lined amphoras, allowing pure, unadulterated Nero character to shine.

Crimson-hued and beautifully aromatic, it’s full of mezcal, black cherry, tomato, Indian spices, and stem ginger, with that signature orange peel note adding complexity. The palate is pomegranate, dark raspberry, and morello cherry, balanced by refreshing sweet-sour acidity - almost like a Negroni in wine form. Fine tannins, savoury grip, and mouthwatering length make it impossible to put down.

A wild, textural, and utterly compelling Nero d’Avola, this is Brash Higgins at its best - and a must for fans of adventurous, amphora-aged reds.

"It’s medium weight, a little high toned but pretty easygoing for the style, with its savouriness and fresh finish making it a handy wine at table."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "From the home Omensetter vineyard; 180 days on skins in 200L wax-lined amphorae. There are many similarities and also many differences to the year prior. This is meaningfully lighter of feel, brisker, less commandingly structured, though still with its darkly spiced tenor. Pickled black cherries, panforte, moist tobacco, salted licorice, preserved raspberries, amaro herbs, sarsaparilla, roasted hazelnut and marzipan. It’s medium weight, a little high toned but pretty easygoing for the style, with its savouriness and fresh finish making it a handy wine at table." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Super Drinkable

Great Wine went down too quickly.

The first to graft Nero d’Avola in McLaren Vale to our organic estate Omensetter Vineyard in 2009, this 13th vintage of the drought tolerant Sicilian varietal was picked in early March after a warmish and breezy February eased the pace of the ripening Nero grapes. 2023 to the point was a wettish year with low yields and acidity.
The transparency of the Nero d’Avola grape was preserved in our “NDV” by using gentle, ancient techniques and naturally occurring wild yeasts. The grapes were destemmed, save 10%, then fermented wild and aged on skins and seeds for six months in locally made 200L bees-wax lined clay amphoras (aka clay pots).

“Crimson in colour, with hints of mezcal, tomato, black cherry, Indian spices and stem ginger on the nose. Orange peel also present which is usual in this wine. Reminiscent of a Negroni cocktail, angostura bitters and all. A pomegranate, bright dark raspberry and morello cherry mid-palate balanced by a refreshing sweet and sour red cherry acidity.” – Brad Hickey, Vinitor, Feb 1, 2025.

Brash Higgins

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.

In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.

Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.
