The 2023 Violet Hour Shiraz captures everything we love about McLaren Vale Shiraz, with a fresh, modern twist. Named after the dusky, violet-hued skies that marked the Bondars’ first-ever Shiraz harvest, this wine is all about elegance and power in perfect harmony.

From the Rayner Vineyard—a revered site where the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs meet the structure of Seaview—this Shiraz offers the best of both worlds. Bright blue and red fruits take centre stage, complemented by silky tannins and a gentle aromatic lift that gives the wine a beautiful, expansive feel without the weight of heavy oak.

Mainly from the sandy patches of the Bondar home Rayner vineyard from the top of the hill, with a small portion from lower down on clay and limestone. The value here has always been super keen. That’s as true as ever with this iteration from a cool year, typically lifted and fragrant but also with some serious import. A tick up from mid-weight, this is spicy and peppered ferruginous minerality, along with blackberry, dark cherries, tapenade, violet, cassia, bay, coffee bean, and salted licorice. Red berries swell up on the palate, with a thoughtfully woven skein of tannins underwriting its class. Excellent.

This wine pays homage to the Bondar style with fragrance and a lightness of touch. We used whole bunches and extended time on skins, which helps to create that lightness, and adds dimensions of flavour and a silky mouth feel.

Fermented with indigenous yeasts and minimal additions, aged in older French oak, Violet Hour should improve nicely over the next five years or so and will suit lighter meat dishes and pasta beautifully.

Andre & Selina Bondar are one of the great modern Australian wine success stories. We have been massive fans of their wines since their very first vintage and tell anyone who will listen that if you want to taste what modern McLaren Vale wines are all about then this is who you need to try.

Their home block, the highly decorated Rayner Vineyard, which straddles the Blewitt Springs and Seaview sub-regions of The Vale, was originally planted back in the 1950s but the Bondar family chapter in that vineyard's story will be its most significant. Dre and Sel's wines are honest and vibrant, built more on freshness and digestibility rather than raw South Australian power.

They make brilliant, vibrant Grenache, balanced and concentrated Shiraz, elegant Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, and one of the country's most bankable Rose wines plus a raft of small-batch alternative varieties. Their range nails quality and drinkability at every turn.
