Description

This is the big brother to the Violet Hour and the Midnight Hour, standing as the serious, cellar-worthy apex of the Bondar Shiraz lineup. It is drawn exclusively from the two oldest blocks on the Rayner estate, a site that is fast becoming one of the most celebrated in McLaren Vale.

The blend is specific and deliberate. About three-quarters of the fruit comes from Block 24, planted in 1950 on deep sands and ironstone. These dry-grown vines provide the perfume and the muscle of the wine. The remainder comes from Block 1, planted in 1960 on clay and limestone in a cool gully, which provides the structural backbone and grip.

Winemaker Andre Bondar doesn't hold back on the technique here. He utilised a massive 90% whole bunches in the wild fermentation. That high stem component brings a savoury, herbal freshness that cuts right through the old-vine fruit density. Aged for a year in older French oak followed by six months settling in large foudres, this is a complex, structured Shiraz that shows just how elegant the Vale can be.

"The cool year, the third in a row, plays into the house credo, balancing fruit depth and intensity with pep and floral lift. It’s a very good release."

96 points - "From the two oldest blocks on the Bondar-owned Rayner vineyard. The 1960 vines are on clay and limestone; the 1950s, being the major component, on deep sand with ironstone. Andre Bondar is never going to pursue rich styles, but this bottling usually has a little more supple generosity. That’s still true here, with a sultry feel to the dark-fruited nose in blackberry, boysenberry and black cherry, and to the silky, saline palate. There’s also a malty, tarry note, master stock, kelp, violets and iron. The cool year, the third in a row, plays into the house credo, balancing fruit depth and intensity with pep and floral lift. It’s a very good release." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

Bold, dry prominent black and red fruits

Shiraz from the two oldest blocks on our Rayner Vineyard - the 1950 and 1960 plantings. The 1950 block is dry-grown on deep sandy soils with ironstone rocks, this gives wonderful fragrance and an elegant structure. The 1960 planting is in shallow clay on limestone base, this gives the bones - the structure around the pretty flesh. Limited release.

Bondar Wines

Andre & Selina Bondar are one of the great modern Australian wine success stories. We have been massive fans of their wines since their very first vintage and tell anyone who will listen that if you want to taste what modern McLaren Vale wines are all about then this is who you need to try.

Their home block, the highly decorated Rayner Vineyard, which straddles the Blewitt Springs and Seaview sub-regions of The Vale, was originally planted back in the 1950s but the Bondar family chapter in that vineyard's story will be its most significant. Dre and Sel's wines are honest and vibrant, built more on freshness and digestibility rather than raw South Australian power.

They make brilliant, vibrant Grenache, balanced and concentrated Shiraz, elegant Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, and one of the country's most bankable Rose wines plus a raft of small-batch alternative varieties. Their range nails quality and drinkability at every turn.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
