Description

Bleasdale’s roots run deep in Langhorne Creek. Founded in the 1850s by English sailor-turned-vigneron Frank Potts, the estate is still guided by his descendants today – a rare and remarkable continuity that speaks to both place and family legacy. Among their many achievements, Bleasdale has become Australia’s leading champion of Malbec, a variety more often associated with Argentina but one that thrives in the region’s fertile floodplain soils.

The Second Innings Malbec is their most approachable expression – bright, plush and immediately charming. Named in honour of Frank Potts II (who once built Bleasdale’s famous red gum press and enjoyed a game of cricket on the side), it captures the variety’s juicy, fruit-driven side. Expect a burst of dark plums, red berries and a gentle flicker of spice, wrapped in velvety tannins that make it dangerously drinkable from the first pour.

Made with a light touch – short skin contact, a mix of oak and tank ageing – this is Malbec in its purest, friendliest form. Perfect as an introduction to the grape or simply as a reliable mid-week red, it’s a delicious reminder that Langhorne Creek remains the Australian home of Malbec and Bleasdale are still the kings.

"Malbec this good at this price, really, it doesn’t get any better."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

Malbec: from humble workhorse to higher flyer

The 2021 and 2022 are proff positive how good the lower end Malbec can be. Enjoyable out of the bottle - more on the dry, dusty flavors spectrum, dotted with fruit notes. A shame this isn't sold 'on the cheap' by the litre/half litre with tangy pastas and pizza tucker. Add a good side salad.

Background
Bleasdale’s founder Frank Potts, bequeathed the majority of his business to his sixth son, Frank Potts II. Frank Potts II played an important role in Bleasdale’s history, being responsible for building its famed red gum press. The Second Innings Malbec label depicts Frank Potts II taking part in a family game of cricket on the Bleasdale property. Malbec is rarely seen as a varietal wine in Australia but here at Bleasdale and in Langhorne Creek it stands on its own two feet and performs well enough to earn its stripes. This wine shows vibrant primary fruit flavours of plums, red berries and pepper spice. A plush, juicy red with velvety smooth tannins.

Bleasdale

Historic South Australian wine producer, Bleasdale, was established in 1850 by English migrant Frank Potts who arrived on the HMS Buffalo in 1836. For four generations, the Potts family have farmed their portion of Langhorne Creek, and are baked into the lore of South Australia's rich and multifaceted agricultural/viticultural history.

Their current-day winemaker, Paul Hotker, has had an incredible run of late. In 2017 he was named the 2018 Halliday Wine Companion Winemaker of the Year, in 2019 he took out Australia's most coveted Wine Show accolade, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy.

In 2023 they were awarded the highly coveted Halliday Winery of the Year. Regardless of your preferred wine style, there is something of exceptional value on offer from Bleasdale here for you.
