Description

Brendon Keys is red hot on Gamay for a future hero of the Adelaide Hills.

Where many sites in the Hills are bordering on too warm for high-quality Pinot Noir, Gamay could be the thing to replace it for lighter-framed, juicy red wines that are primed for chilling before drinking.

These are the oldest Gamay vines in the Adelaide Hills, grown organically by Brackenwood in Kutipo.

This version is quite 'grown-up' in style, built around 100% whole bunch ferments, yielding a spicy, structural style of the variety as opposed to some of the jubier, more fleshy versions emerging from the region.

95 points
"Smoky and reductive but alive and, dare it be said, thrilling. This is a red wine that can, simultaneously, be described as dry, light, impactful, soft and stern. It tastes of strawberries, unsweetened. It's alive with twig and spice notes. Its dryness is a sheet, flat, taut, exacting. This is modern Australian wine running barefoot through the hills, fun-loving from a distance but serious up close."
- Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

"If this happens to be your gateway into Hills Gamay, enjoy the enticing journey ahead."

Gamay from the Adelaide Hills is one to watch, and the vines that made this one are some of the oldest in the region. A little smoky, a touch reductive, and with a delicate purity that is the hallmark of the varietal. At times dismissed as the lesser sibling to Pinot Noir – a victim, we would argue, of the stylistic choice to serve Beaujolais in its infancy – Gamay can in fact yield a far more beautiful, subtle result. A citric spritz – a common theme in this cool, late vintage – and strawberry steam from a pot of jam. On the palate a chewy, red lolly. If this happens to be your gateway into Hills Gamay, enjoy the enticing journey ahead. 100% Gamay from Brackenwood in Kutipo. 100% whole bunch fermentation in concrete open fermenters. 15 days on skin and pressed to 2- to 3-year old French barriques for 10 months. Bottled unfiltered and unfined.

BK Wines

BK Wines is one of the poster boys of the modern artisan wine movement in the Adelaide Hills.

Owner/winemaker Brendon Keys is not afraid to do things differently. His wines toe the line perfectly between a lo-fi and scientific approach to winemaking. The wines are precise, edgy and layered, showing the perfect intersection of a natural wine ideology and sound technical craftsmanship.

His wines are creatively imagined, an artist meets skateboarding punk rocker kind of vibe. And they have a very solid and well-deserved following. In short, BK is one of the more respected producers of the Adelaide Hills avant-garde.
