Description

The 2023 Premium Pinot is all restraint and precision, a vintage shaped by a long, cool Gippsland ripening that’s delivered poise over polish. There’s no chest-beating here. Just a wine that knows exactly where it’s from, and where it’s going.

It opens with authority: wild cherry, cured meat, dried rose petals, and the faint hum of woodsmoke. Beneath that, a deep mineral thread runs through it - earth, graphite, maybe even a lick of oyster shell. It’s seamless. Introspective. The kind of wine you lean into, rather than race through.

The old Leongatha site still does the heavy lifting, close-planted, dry-grown vines on a sheltered northeast slope - but the touch of Jean-Marie Fourrier is unmistakable. Extraction is gentler. The tannins, more finely tuned. And yet the soul of the wine - the wild edge, the flicker of volatility, the push-pull of fruit and funk remains intact.

This is an excellent rendition of one of Australia's most famous and sought-after Pinot Noirs.

"Premium is revealing more aromatics than its siblings, starting with lavender and violets, a hint of pepper and then the cherry fruit rolls in.... The palate builds, the finish lingers and you hope someone pours you another glass. Beautifully poised yet will garner more complexity in time."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

"The concentration and power of the wine are impressive. It should be cellared a few years to give the bouquet time to develop its full complexity, which it surely will."

97 points - "Premium is revealing more aromatics than its siblings, starting with lavender and violets, a hint of pepper and then the cherry fruit rolls in. Full bodied, ripe and rich, with tannins seemingly layered and fine grained, the spicy oak a support act, concentrated and deep yet there’s such freshness and vibrancy within thanks to the acidity. The palate builds, the finish lingers and you hope someone pours you another glass. Beautifully poised yet will garner more complexity in time." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Deep red tinged with bright purple at the rim; a reserved bouquet of dried herbs and dried cherry, still a little in its shell but the magnitude of the flavour and structure is readily apparent. Masses of fine but drying tannins flood the palate. There's a lovely deep core of slightly overripe sweet fruit and the concentration and power of the wine are impressive. It should be cellared a few years to give the bouquet time to develop its full complexity, which it surely will. It's arguably a little overripe—like some Burgundies of recent hot seasons." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

    One the great Aussie Pinots

Its clear from the get go that this is a great Aussie Pinot. Its only bested but the Reserve.

Glace cherries and savory, dusty notes greet the nose initially but also showing hints of vanilla and spice; refined and poised at this stage but rest assured complexity will crescendo with time. The palate is svelte and satiny, lovely balance, resolved and complete with lovely length that will only get better with age. If drunk young we recommend decanting for an hour or so - Winery Team

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
