Description

Bass Phillip is a renowned Australian Chardonnay producer, whose white wines, funnily enough, have historically been overshadowed by their Pinots. But make no mistake, their Premium Chardonnay is among the country's classiest and most cellarworthy examples.

The 2023 release comes from a small block of the original 1979 planting, farmed organically and biodynamically. It’s a cooler season wine, and that comes through in its shape and feel: citrus and white stone fruit lead the way, with some almond meal and a savoury edge adding depth.

The oak is tucked in, the texture is firm, and there’s a clean line of acidity that carries it along an impossibly long finish. The savouriness and 'old world' stylings that this wine is noted for still there in spades. It’ll take a few years to show its best, but it’s already a brilliant glass of Chardonnay.

"It's big and generous but arguably lacks a little in freshness and brightness. It presents as oxidatively made style, a bit outside the Australian mainstream, more like a Burgundy. The palate has wonderful richness and depth of flavour. Truly impressive."

"Always a gold hue to the Premium, albeit bright and light. Complex and detailed, savoury in outlook... There’s a slight oxidative note within, adding another layer of detail. Impressive. Distinctly Bass Phillip."

97 points - "Full, brassy tinted yellow colour. There are oxidative aromas of malt, toast, butter and marzipan. Full bodied and rich, ample and generous, finishing with well-balanced tannin grip. It's big and generous but arguably lacks a little in freshness and brightness. It presents as oxidatively made style, a bit outside the Australian mainstream, more like a Burgundy. The palate has wonderful richness and depth of flavour. Truly impressive." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "Always a gold hue to the Premium, albeit bright and light. Complex and detailed, savoury in outlook with spicy oak, clotted cream and nutty lees, a touch of lemon juice and pith and neat phenolics throughout with a gentle tug on the finish. There’s a slight oxidative note within, adding another layer of detail. Impressive. Distinctly Bass Phillip." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

Highly fragrant, white linen, a twist of lemon with peachy, nectarine base notes and a hint of nougat. The palate is incredibly focused by a core of acid that provides drive and length with a supple lithe mid palate and delicious flavours that mirror the nose run the length of the palate. Certainly, made for the long haul...but enjoyable now - Winery team

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
