Description

Nebbiolo isn’t common in Gippsland, but Bass Phillip have been quietly working with the variety for years, treating it with the same patience and care as their Pinot Noir. The vines sit on free-draining soils that suit Nebbiolo’s naturally vigorous growth, and the long, cool season helps it ripen slowly while holding onto acidity.

The 2023 fruit was picked by hand, destemmed and fermented in small open vats with gentle plunging. Maturation was in older French oak, just enough to soften the tannins without adding oak flavour. No shortcuts – just time and a light touch to let the variety’s structure and perfume come through.

It’s got that classic Nebbiolo frame – fine but persistent tannins, lifted aromatics and a savoury core – but with a slightly softer edge thanks to the Gippsland climate. Built to age, but already showing plenty of charm in its youth.

    Where Gippsland Meets Piedmont

The 2023 Bass Phillip Nebbiolo is a beautifully expressive wine that captures both elegance and intensity. True to its Piedmont heritage but with a distinctly Gippsland finesse, it opens with lifted aromas of rose petal, dried herbs, and red cherry. The palate is finely structured, with layers of sour cherry, wild strawberry, and subtle spice, framed by silky tannins and vibrant acidity. It balances delicacy and depth with remarkable precision, promising both immediate charm and graceful ageing. A superbly crafted Nebbiolo that stands among Australia’s best.

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
