Description

The Bass Phillip Gamay is not just a glou glou glugger - it's one of the more structured and cellar-worthy Gamays in this country.

The 2023 release shows a slightly leaner, more savoury edge thanks to the cool season - think redcurrant, rhubarb, and just-snapped herbs, with a gentle ferrous twist underneath. The brightness is there, but it’s not bouncing off the walls. There’s a seriousness to this Gamay that sets it apart.

Sandy tannins and a line of acidity keep things taut, but it still drinks with ease. No carbonic candy, just a complex, food-friendly red that makes more sense with each glass.

Gamay is making a run in Australia right now and here is one of the country's benchmark examples. Limited stocks.

DESCRIPTION: Bass Phillip Gamay is intensely varietal with wild berries and plummy flavours. Good Gamay is noted for sour cherry and earth that make them most suited for consumption in the warmer months. These Gamay's age well over a six year period, starting with fresh sourcherries, plums and plums mellowing into soft rounded stone fruits. Pronounced varietal fruits (wild berries and plummy flavours). Fruity with firm acidity. Doesn't have the length of pinot noir but freshness and acidity give these wines a satisfying place with cold meats, terrines, charcouterire, light pasta and even seafoods.

WINEMAKER’S NOTES: The usual gamey-wild berry fruits for classical Gamay. Harmonious flavour; fills your mouth, finishing long with the same clean fruitiness. Bright, fresh, easy drinking suited to red meats. “Cru Beujolais” in style: our best Gamay yet.

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
