Description

The 2023 Estate Pinot is a cooler, more finely etched version of what we’ve come to expect from this wine. The season gave the fruit time to hang and develop slowly, and that patience shows. It’s not trying to impress with size or gloss - just clean, expressive Pinot from one of Gippsland’s most respected sites.

There’s red cherry and cranberry up front, followed by hints of rosehip, bramble, and a touch of autumn leaf. The palate is light on its feet, with fine acidity carrying the fruit and a line of gentle tannin threading it all together. It’s savoury without being stern and very drinkable as a young wine in the context of Bass Phillip.

Still drawn from the original Leongatha vineyard - close-planted, dry-grown, and biodynamically farmed. The winemaking, now under Jean-Marie Fourrier, has leaned further into finesse: wild ferments, minimal handling, and oak that stays in the background.

If you're a long-time admirer of Bass Phillip Pinot, this is a brilliant vintage that ranks among the best in recent memory.

"What an excellent start to the ’23 pinots at Bass Phillip with the first tier, the Estate, showcasing gorgeous fruit flavours and a high level of detail. There’s an energy and vitality, too... It's obviously still very much primary yet compelling nonetheless... A bit of a showstopper."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Deep red with a purple tinge, very darkly coloured for an Australian pinot... Delicious depth of sweetly ripe cherry favour on the palate, bold and firmly supported by plentiful fine tannins, drawing out superbly in a long tail"

There’s an energy and vitality, too, alongside sweet black cherries, kirsch and aniseed with fresh herbs to the fore. It's obviously still very much primary yet compelling nonetheless. Fuller bodied, there’s a succulence across the palate that is caressed by fine tannins and bright acidity. A bit of a showstopper." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "Deep red with a purple tinge, very darkly coloured for an Australian pinot, the bouquet reserved and discreet but richly endowed with ripe dark-cherry fruit, some fragrant herbs in the background but the bright pinot fruit holding centre-stage. Delicious depth of sweetly ripe cherry favour on the palate, bold and firmly supported by plentiful fine tannins, drawing out superbly in a long tail" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

    Succulent

Mid ruby. Aromatic red cherries and some powderiness – smells like Burgundy. Medium bodied, rich red

cherries/raspberries with a glycerolly macerated fruit feel. Good fruit length, acid structure.

Fragrant potpourri of aromas, rose petals and red berry notes, with a hint of China tea; the very essence of Pinot Noir. A classic iron fist in a velvet glove palate. A lush fruit driven middle, enveloped by powdery tannins with delicious flavours that dance delicately across the palate - Winery Team

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
