Description

This is an elite example of McLaren Vale Grenache from Rob Mack and the Aphelion team.

It's only released in years when the quality of fruit is just right, to craft the best of the best in their fleet of delicious Grenache offerings.

This is a wine that will develop well with some time in a quiet, dark place. This is the apex predator in the Aphelion range.

Only 40 dozen made... get in quick.

"Beautifully balanced, elegant wine, and already complex. It should reward many years of cellaring." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points
"It has the pretty fragrance of the season, but is intrinsically savoury, in flavour and texture, distinctive sandy tannins and peppy freshness carrying the flavours tightly before they fan out impressively on the finish. Excellent, with ready appeal, but better in a couple of years."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "Medium-depth red-purple hue; the aromas spicy with white-pepper, earthy/undergrowth, black cherry and meaty aromas, a trace of funk adding an extra layer, the palate full bodied and firm with layers of supple, powdery tannins adding structure, length and impact to the concentrated flavour. Beautifully balanced, elegant wine, and already complex. It should reward many years of cellaring." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "Blewitt Springs. Brini is 40% of the blend fermented as whole bunches and matured is seasoned puncheons; the Wait fruit (60%) was destemmed and raised in a 950-litre concrete egg, with five and a half months on skins. Pale in the glass, this exudes red floral notes over strawberry, sour cherry, dried cranberry and blood orange, with hints of bergamot and rosehip teas. It has the pretty fragrance of the season, but is intrinsically savoury, in flavour and texture, distinctive sandy tannins and peppy freshness carrying the flavours tightly before they fan out impressively on the finish. Excellent, with ready appeal, but better in a couple of years." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "Raspberry, mint tea, and quite some perfume too, mandarin peel, strawberry and peanut shells and pandan leaf (don’t mind me). It’s medium-bodied, all the poached strawberry and spice, fine emery board tannin, and while it’s kind of feathery, it does have some presence and granularity that’s very pleasing, there’s also something exotic here too, a kind of cardamom perfume, and there’s a juicy blood orange and strawberry finish of excellent length. Lovely wine. Frisky and energetic. Drinks a charm, even as a young wine, and maybe best enjoyed in flush of youth? Hard to say." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2023 vintage in McLaren Vale was cool and wet, both in the 2022 lead-up through winter and spring, on through to the summer and fall of 2023. As a result, the wines, particularly the Grenache, are translucent in style and much lighter in body than the 2022 and 2021 iterations. So here, the 2023 Rapture Old Vine Grenache Noir leads with cherry, red apple skin, clove, raw cocoa and shaved fennel. This is certainly finer and softer than previous years, yet I find that to be an attractive quality all the same. This is likely not one for the cellar but a wine for now, or close to now. It is diaphanous and lacy, lovely, light, juicy and fine. Tasted from bottle 794 of 800. 14.3% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Aphelion

Aphelion was established by Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes with a clear vision. They had one thing on their mind, to craft: "Genuine, Authentic, Quality McLaren Vale Grenache."

A couple of vintages in and they are right on the money. They have close relationships with local growers in the Vale who provide them with excellent Grenache fruit and Rob's deft touch in the winery takes care of the rest.

The range is slowly growing, as is their family. Their investigation into their pet variety is deepening, as is their fan base. The small batches of wine that come out of the Aphelion stable should have a close eye kept on them, more often than not there's something exciting and great value in the bottle.
