Description

Shiraz at Yeringberg has always followed its own path. While the Yarra Valley has long been home to elegant expressions of the variety, Sandra de Pury has shaped this wine into something uniquely Yeringberg—perfumed, finely structured, and effortlessly poised.

The 2022 Shiraz comes from three different clones (PT23, 1654, and a ‘100-year-old’ selection), each contributing layers of complexity. Low yields in this vintage meant intensely flavoured fruit, hand-picked and fermented with 15 days on skins. While Viognier often makes a cameo in this wine, 2022 saw a small addition of frozen Marsanne skins instead, lifting the aromatics and enhancing texture. Maturation took place over 20 months in French oak (30% new), giving the wine just enough polish without losing its natural vibrancy.

There’s an ease to how this wine moves—blueberry and dark cherry meet violet, white pepper, and a touch of Moroccan spice. The palate is supple yet structured, with a savoury, almost ferrous quality adding depth beneath the plush fruit. It’s fresh, bright, and unmistakably Yeringberg, with fine, powdery tannins and a finish that lingers just long enough to leave you wanting another sip.

Sandra’s touch is all over this wine. It’s a Shiraz that doesn’t try to be something it’s not—just quiet confidence, elegance, and the kind of detail that rewards patience.

"A medium crimson purple. A gentle wine in '22, you'll find aromas of red and blue fruits together with loads of white pepper, spice, and fresh flowers. There's a little meatiness too, which follows onto the medium-bodied, elegant yet persistent palate. A touch closed at present; this will open up and become more perfumed and silkier over the next three to five years and beyond."

Our Shiraz is a wine that continues to demonstrate the affinity of the variety with the Yarra Valley. A very low-yielding, high-quality vintage produced excellent, intense wines in small quantities.

Picked on March 15, 2022. Bottled in November 2023. We have three different Shiraz clones in the vineyard—PT23, 1654, and ‘100-year-old’ clones—each with a unique flavour profile and ripening pattern. Very low yields in 2022. The grapes were very lightly crushed and fully destemmed. There was no Viognier addition this year, but we included a small amount of frozen Marsanne skins. The wine was pressed after 15 days on skins and then matured in barrel (30% new) for 20 months, with several rackings along the way.

With the vines now nearing a quarter of a century old, we are happy with our decision to replant Shiraz, a variety we had originally planted in the 1970s and later removed. A generous and complex nose, laden with blueberry, violet, and white pepper, unfolds with notes of juniper berry and Moroccan spice. The palate—lively, fresh, and elegantly plush—has a wonderfully savoury, almost ferrous structure and a seamless, silky balance.

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
