Description

Yeringberg is one of the Yarra Valley’s most cherished family-run estates. The de Pury family has been farming this remarkable site for over a century, and their Cabernet blend has long been the jewel in the crown.

Sandra de Pury’s 2022 release leans into everything that makes Yeringberg so special. It’s not about power or polish, but detail, restraint and balance. A true field blend - 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec and 4% Cabernet Franc - picked when the vineyard is ready, not the calendar. Each parcel is handled gently, with time on skins and 21 months in French oak (40% new) shaping the wine without overwhelming it.

The nose is pure Yeringberg: blackcurrant, plum, bay leaf and cedar, with a graphite edge that adds tension. The palate is seamless, layered with dark berries, cocoa and herbs, framed by fine tannin and lifted by fresh acidity. It’s harmonious now, but clearly built for the long haul, give it 15+ years if you can, or a generous decant if you can’t.

Classic Yarra Cabernet from a place that knows exactly what it’s doing.

98 points & Red Wine of the Year
"Medium to full ruby red colour. Blackberry, black olive and dried bayleaf on the nose. A wonderfully complex and harmonious palate with dark fruits, wood spices and a dried leaf note all wrapped in finely honed gravelly tannins. The palate is medium weight but with a sense of restrained tension, carrying to a prodigious length and allowing the finish to be a joyous fan of classic cabernet characters."
- Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

98 points – “A wonderful bouquet of perfectly ripened black cherries, blackcurrants, cedar (from the already integrated oak), and lavender. With its core of dark fruits and impeccably balanced, fully ripe yet silky tannins, this complex and harmonious wine is destined to join the ranks of the very best Yeringbergs.” – Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

    one of my favorite cabernets

the Yeringberg cabernets is one of my favorites, and it is quite hard to get hands on it as it's always sold out! the 2021 yeringberg is extremely balance, fruity, elegant, discreet and persistent on the palate! it is even better when enjoying it with some yeringberg lamb!

The 49th vintage of a Yeringberg from our old vines. A high-quality vintage producing excellent, intense wines in small quantities.

Picked between 24 March – 1 April 2022. Bottled Feb 2024. This year’s blend comprises Cabernet Sauvignon 63%, Merlot 16%, Petit Verdot 10%, Malbec 7%, Cabernet Franc 4%. A little more Cabernet Sauvignon than usual and a lot less Cabernet Franc. Yields across the five varieties varied from 0.5 to 2.3 tonnes per acre. Yeringberg is always a ‘field’ blend, i.e., the vineyard and the vintage determine the final blend, not the winemaker.

The fruit is all hand-picked and carefully sorted. The grapes are destemmed and crushed, then fermented in small open-top tanks and hand-plunged. Time on skins ranged from 12–21 days. The wine was aged in French oak barriques for 21 months, about 40% new.

A wonderful year for our Yeringberg blend. This wine will be fascinating to observe as it evolves over time. An elegant and complex nose of blackcurrant, violet, and liquorice is interwoven with notes of Christmas cake, tapenade, and graphite. The palate, generous and pure, laden with blue and black fruits, is understated and beautifully delineated. It has mid-weight elegance, seamlessly embedded tannins, and a long, refreshingly generous finish.

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
